Billy Childish is enough of a favorite of mine that I tracked down the rare 60s German guitar he played for much of the Headcoats records haha. It’s the red one below, a 1964-ish Klira Sioux, wrapped in red Naugahyde from the factory. One of the bands I’m in is covering the Headcoats song I’m Hurtin’ too!

Back in my punk days I saved a few show flyers. Here’s one from the Descendents show back in 85’. The artwork was done by my friends dad R.K. Sloane. He later did the artwork for Guns & Roses album and t-shirts along with a few other bands.

"One By One"
Lyrics by Woody Guthrie (1939)
Performed by Billy Bragg & Wilco (1997)
Mermaid Avenue (1998)

One by one the teardrops fall as I write you
One by one my words come falling on the page
One by one my dreams are fading in the twilight
One by one my schemes are fading fast away

One by one the flowers fading in my garden
One by one the leaves are falling from the trees
One by one my hopes are vanished in the clouds clear
One by one like snowflakes melting in the breeze

One by one my hair is turning gray
One by one my dreams are fading fast away
One by one I read your letters over
One by one I lay them all away

One by one the days are slipping up behind you
One by one the sweetest days of life go by
One by one the moments stealing out behind you
One by one she'll come and find not you or I

One by one I hear the soft words that you whispered
One by one I feel your kisses soft and sweet
One by one I hope you'll say the words to marry
One by one to one by one forever be

I remember obsessing over that CD when it came out. Listened to it maybe a year ago and it still holds up. Having Billy Bragg and Wilco do the music was 100% the right choice.

I'd be beyond remiss if I didn't note the passing of Tom Verlaine (December 13, 1949 – January 28, 2023).

To say he was influential does not do justice to the word. Amongst many things he and his band Television played CBGB a lot. They were the Sunday night house band essentially, playing first in April 1974 just a month after it opened in the form most of us are familiar with it (in my case only from stories, never having been to NYC, much less lucky enough to ever make it to CBGB).

And for @Hulk, Wilco covering Television.

Made it to CBGBs only once, in May 2002 (which was the same week as Cruise Moab -- one of the few CMs that I have missed). Saw three bands and I was really impressed with the opener, a new band called the Damnwells. I've kind of followed them ever since, as well as the solo music of the lead singer/songwriter Alex Dezen. Here's one of their early songs that I really like.

"The Walls Came Down"
The Call
Modern Romans (1983)

Michael Been, the singer and guitarist of the The Call at this point, passed away in 2010. But his son, who appears in the video, is named Robert and now leads the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Hell yeah man. I saw The Call at the Rainbow Music Hall when they were touring this release. No jokes about my age, please. :D

The coincidence, my stars. I just started a book called "Meet Me In The Bathroom" by Lizzy Goodman that's specifically about the rebirth of rock in New York in the new millienium. From what I've read so far I think you'd love it.

The supposed playlist of every song mentioned in the book.

Story about that. I'd never have heard about the book probably other that I was sitting at the new Chair 6 lift shack chatting with the lifties and got to talking about music and how I kinda miss Denver and all the shows. So if you're ever skiing up there, hit chair six and if the 20-something young lady from Ohio is working say hi from the Poma engineer guy and that I took her recommendation to read it.

Just realized, this is actually her in the white sunglasses.

@DaveInDenver The world last an amazing talent with Tom Verlaine’s passing. When I first heard Marquee Moon my understanding of music shifted - and that’s only happened to me maybe 5-6 times.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club story x2:
On their first US tour I drove to The Shelter in Detroit - a small mostly goth dance club underneath Saint Andrew’s Music Hall, the larger rock venue upstairs - to see them. The opening band was a very avant garde and very loud act called Paik. Seeing them was the second time music shifted for me. My tastes tended towards the experimental for the subsequent 10-15 years. (The first shift was hearing the MC5’s first record when I was 14).

I went to see BRMC on their 2nd US tour as well. Drove 2 hours from where I was living near Cincinnati to a suburb of Columbus. The venue was this golf-themed sports bar with an outdoor patio. Not realizing what the venue was ahead of time, I got turned away at the door because it was 21+ and I was 20. I was a little disappointed but figured I’d hang out in the parking lot next to the stage and could hear the band just fine. I was sitting out there on the hood of my 240SX when the dudes from BRMC came over to me to ask what I was doing. They were sympathetic and left. They came back 5 minutes later carrying a guitar case and handed it to me. They said “you’re our roadie now. Follow us.” They walked straight to the back gate of the patio, and right up on the stage. They told me to set the guitar down and to have a seat to the side. I got to watch the entire show from that spot. We talked afterwards and they were all very kind to me - and just as confused about their manager’s choice of venue. I grew out of their music but still have a lot of respect for what they did for me.
