if you romp on the gas pedal do you get a cloud of black smoke? you can bring it by and we can adjust the fuel if you want. 3-twozerofour 8156.
Diesel only is out of business...

bottom pic is fuel adjustment
Wes, I do get some black smoke. If you don’t mind, I would love to come get some tutelage on this engine. Can I text the number you gave? I’ll work around your schedule as far as getting over to you.

He's talking about accessing this wheel to adjust the fuel during boost:

yep they both work and need different adjustments. you can turn the main fuel down to pass tho. then tweak it to when you want it.

You could pull the front driveshaft and lock the CDL to test in rear wheel drive if it opens up options or reduced cost of testing.

Matt’s last comment made me realize Diesels only isn’t an option. They only do 2wd.
Either way here it is, I was there Monday for another passing test on ‘lil smokey (Als Jetta)

I wouldn’t go get anything worked on there, seems like they aren’t great at actually fixing things and maybe screw ppl.

Kurt - Opacity defined here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/198fGfwCnyr0Rn9Z4Ho-i-Xx_Dhaay08D/view

“Opacity” means the degree to which an air pollutant obscures the view of an observer
expressed in percentage of obscuration, or the degree, expressed in percent, to which
transmittance of light is reduced by the air pollutant.

They shine a light through the exhaust stream coming out the tailpipe.

My diesel emissions station prints the torque and horsepower on the back side of the emission sheet - did yours? Also, it's worth noting that the emission test may not show max engine torque or horsepower, because of the way the dyno test is optimized for an emission test, not for horsepower.

From the same document (but, good luck reading this miserable thing)

The smoke opacity standard for all diesel vehicles of model year 1991
and newer subject to snap acceleration J1667 opacity tests, under Part A, IV.C.5. of this regulation shall
be 40% opacity.

The smoke opacity standard for all diesel vehicles of model year 1990 and older subject
to snap acceleration J1667 opacity tests, under Part A, IV.C.5. of this regulation shall be 55% opacity.

The smoke opacity standard for all naturally aspirated light-duty diesel vehicles subject to opacity
test under Part B of this regulation shall be forty percent (40%) opacity for (5) five seconds. The
smoke opacity standard for turbocharged light-duty vehicles shall be thirty-five percent (35%) for
five (5) seconds.

Thanks Steve. I went over to Wes’ place and he adjusted my fuel. There was a significant decrease in the exhaust plume after adjustment. I decided to stop where we were and will test again from there.
It was great meeting Wes, and got some good information from him.
Rising Sun is a fantastic place to get help and information. My HDJ81 ran great going home, so have high hopes it passes the next test.

Well.....hell.

I got really close, but still failed. 35% is the magic number for my year.

I asked if they could turn the fuel down just a little more to pass while I was there....”Well, we don’t really work on these engines, but I can ask...”

Wrong answer. I’ll adjust myself with the new found knowledge from Wes, and set another appointment. I’m thinking if I turn down the fuel more, I’ll have to adjust the idle up a little. My idle is about 650, and don’t want my idle lower than that really.

dang. it was so high before. we figured we cut it about in half, which was almost the case. Just turn the fuel down a tad more. Don't mess with the idle though. You can bring it by if you want.

So, I took a little time today to drop the fuel some more. I shut it down by another half turn of the screw, and when in gear, the idle rpm was under 600. I took it for a drive, and I had absolutely no power to get it going. I would have to get the rpms up to about 2000 before the converter took hold, and it would take off. As it is now, there’s some lag from throttle to “take off”.
I turned fuel up where idle is a little over 600 when in gear, basically turning fuel down maybe 1/6 of a turn from when I started. Throttle is at least responsive, and feels about where it has been after Wes turned the fuel down.
I’ll make a new appointment next week, and hopefully pass emission.

If you get a pyro installed it will be easier to tune. sounds like you have it just about right.
Too much fuel and the unburned fuel carries more heat. using the pryo can you tell if your overfueling and getting it to the point you have enough fuel for power but not too much carring extra heat out the exhaust.

“Skin of the hair of a gnat’s ass” is how it was described how close it was to failing again....but I did PASS!
Opacity at 40mph was 34.8%, 35 is the limit. At least I can get plates and have breathing room to work/tinker on it.

Thanks again for comments and help! A special thanks to Wes for taking the time out to actually teach me and the initial fuel adjustment..
