This is just around the corner! How many are still making it for the class?

What are you skill levels for recevory?
For recevory I am a begginer. I know 1 or 2 things but *not enough to lead for recevory.
Had to make an important edit. 😆

I always like to go back to the basics no matter what I think I know. With that said I like to be challenged a bit...

Hey Gang! I'm excited to see y'all on Saturday. Here's a rough outline of what to expect.

I know Brandi has kept you all informed, thanks Guuurl! This will be a fairly long and slow going 8hrish day. Bring lunch, snacks, plenty of water and a camp chair.

Bring rain gear just in case. Be sure to bring out your gear and let’s talk about it.

Bring a pair of gloves (mechanics gloves or heavy leather gardening gloves) and appropriate closed toe footwear (no crocs, flip flops, chacos etc).

The day......

Im Stuck! (Intro to the John Marshall method and gear) (1hr)
  1. Secure/Stuck Assessment
  2. Where Does the Vehicle need to end up?
  3. Inventory gear
  4. Create a plan
  5. Share the plan
  6. Execute the plan (no good idea fairy)
Essential Gear
  • Appropriately Rated Gear (WLL vs MTS vs MBS, etc)
  • Mitigate as much risk as you can
  • Gloves
  • Shovel
  • Straps (Ropes) & Static vs Dynamic
  • Shackles (Soft vs Hard)
  • Recovery Points
  • Hitch Mounted Shackle Bracket
  • Hi-Lift (3-5min rundown Anatomy, Safety, Applications, Process)
    • Short Lifting Demo
  • Traction Boards (Tred Pro/Maxtrax)
  • Pull-Pal (Discuss Only)
  • Safe Xtract App (extra credit)
Winching (as a full group) Discussion and Demonstration (0.75hr)
  1. General Safety and Care (winching general and on Trail)
  2. Theory
    1. Sizing
    2. Use Considerations
    3. Mechanical Advantage and Redirects
    4. Rigging (proper rigging, check your rigging)
    5. Personnel and Vehicle State
  3. Signals
  4. Connecting the Controller
  5. Gathering Gear for a single line pull (SLP)
  6. Pulling winch line (7-11 Rule)
  7. Rigging SLP
  8. Conduct Winching
Winching (Partner Up and Split into 2 Groups) Conduct Winching (2hrs)
  • Teach-back as a team (6 steps)
  • Rig as a team
  • Conduct winching
    • Select a control operator and a leader
    • Swap positions halfway through the recovery (Secure the vehicle!)
  • Reset For Next Group
  • AAR and Q&A
Momentum (Vehicle to Vehicle) extraction Discussion and Demonstration (0.5hrs)
  1. General Safety and Care (vehicle to vehicle general and on Trail)
  2. Theory
    1. Sizing
    2. Use Considerations and mire factor
    3. Rigging (proper rigging, check your rigging)
    4. Towing - Speed Escalation (considerations for a manual transmission)
  3. Plan - Signals
  4. Conduct V to V extraction demonstration
Momentum (Vehicle to Vehicle) extraction (Partner Up and Split into 2 Groups) - (1.5 hrs)
  • Teach-back as a team (6 steps)
  • Rig as a team
  • Conduct Extraction
    • Select a stuck vehicle operator and a recovery vehicle operator
    • Swap positions and perform recovery again
  • Reset For Next Group
  • AAR and Q&A
Jack and Stack, Tire Change

For extra credit after we get back to the trail head, we'll hang in the parking lot and go hands on with vehicle jacks and tire changing and discuss any questions you might have. I'll be there as long as you need.
