Summary of the new CARB-compliant cats required (if replaced) on Colorado vehicles. Thanks, Dems.

As of January 1, 2021, all sales or installations of aftermarket catalytic converters for any model year vehicle in Colorado must comply with Air Quality Control Commission Regulation Number 20, 5 CCR 1001-24. Either replacement catalytic converters must be original equipment from the manufacturer (OEM), or a new aftermarket catalytic converter certified as meeting California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards.

Old news. I had been coming for a min.

Engine swaps are pretty much dead, as well. One of the exhaust guys I talked to about doing my exhaust had a 40 that required 4 cats.

I checked to see what would be required if I wanted to get a new exhaust built for my new build, and they want: A VIN Matched ECU (for a block that came with a Carb), take off the sniper, go back to port injection (on a block that came with a carb), new intake manifold, new headers, possibly an air pump, and Cats (which I did anyway). For a 76 FJ40. Stupid as hell.

Sounds like this new law only affects businesses that sell or install cats also so maybe the DIYer can still sneak by. I passed emissions in my 80 series just the other week using two cheapy cats no problem that I installed myself full of booger welds.

I am also really scared for my modified Miata. It gets better MPG and runs on E85 (40% less carbon emissions) than it did stock and I only drive it 5000 miles a year but the law isn't really about air pollution we all know that.

Here is my recent fun with this topic. Keep in mind that I'm in El Paso County with no emission testing (for now). Last month, I took my 82 Pickup for a new exhaust system, including a new cat, to my favorite exhaust shop in C/S. He filled me in on the CARB certified cat required and the massive expensive of the parts. He said if he installed anything that was non-CARB certified and it was not on his approved "list" for an 82 Pickup, he would be facing something like a $45k fine. He was very frustrated and then went on a 15 minute rant about where this state is heading. He built his business specializing in custom exhaust for classic rigs like we have and knew these new rules would have a big impact on his business.

Fast forward to what I ended up doing. As you may know, you can't buy a non-CARB certified cat on-line, because they will not ship it to CO. I refused to spend $600 for a CARB cat so I bought a 48 state approved cat through my sister who lives in Kansas. She shipped it to me and I had my friend install the exhaust system.

I love this state but if we are becoming the new CA and I can no longer drive my junk around town, then I'll be going elsewhere.

Yep, for now. I fully expect full-on Kalifornia CARB to come here within a couple years that will prohibit us to install cheap cats ourselves and all the other draconian BS.

Everyone forgot because they kept calling them "street racers" but Kalifornia cops would pull people over in modified cars, open their hoods, say "that's illegal," tow away their car and crush it. That's the most insane thing and nobody cared because "street racing" and Dom Toretto doing wheelies.

$600 for a CARB cat? That's wild!!

I think I paid about $300 with tax for my CARB-compliant cat including installation out here in California about two years ago. It's for a 1986 22re 4runner. Did prices really go up that much on cats recently!?

I wonder if this is an issue with the supply chain. There have been a few other parts recently that I noticed the prices have gone insane on because of scarcity due to COVID shutting down plants for a while in China and elsewhere, and we're just feeling the impacts now.

At least you don't need computer chips for an '82 pickup. That's something that a lot of auto manufacturers are getting really excited about with starting to shut down assembly lines due to shortages.

I just looked up CARB and non-CARB cats for my 4Runner on Rock Auto - there is a substantial cost difference - 50-100% more for CARB.
