Passed! took the GX in today.. first time in a number of years, and first since my resonator was removed in back. I don't think they even looked at the exhaust, or cats, they never opened the hood. But I got a gas cap inspection, and the full roller treatment.

those numbers almost look too good...

Congrats Tim! Seeing those numbers makes me want to do a 2UZ swap in the 80.

L&N told me they only do emissions now, no repairs. I have to go out of town to find someone.

What reading is it failing on? Given that it is mostly (entirely?) mechanical I would think between all of the minds on here we could figure out what could be done to get you passing.

It passes at 40mph but not lower or higher. Numbers are 37-40 and needs to be 35. I called every shop imaginable and got the run around, finally got ahold of Red Line in C/S. Dude definitely seems to know whats up.

Given that it came from sea level in Japan I believe the injector pump is running high as its hazes when not under any load. Ideas?

Not a diesel head by any means, but with all of the amoebas that used to run around rolling coal I am pretty sure it is as simple as a few adjusting screws on the injector pump. I would try to find an FSM and follow any troubleshooting steps it has. At a minimum it should tell you what does what on the IP.

I've looked into it and it looks like it needs to be timed. I definitely don't have the skills or tools to do that.

There is a screw on the injection pump to increase/decrease fuel. It can or should be timed but you can back off the fuel since diesel emissions is 100% opacity. I've helped a half dozen 80's pass if you want to bring it by.

I know nothing of Toyota diesels, but I run a fuel additive in my PSD specifically to reduce smoke. I currently run Stanadyne, but have run Diesel Kleen, too, with similar results. Unless someone here thinks it's a bad idea, I'd put 2x the recommended amount in the tank and have it tested again. Think of it as HEET for oil burners.

Turbocharged 1FZ’s emission #’s. Runs pretty clean and makes more power than a 2UZ! Should pass for the foreseeable future

Come see me when you get yours back up and running. We'll make her run clean
I’ll come see you when you have a carbureted 2F turbo kit hahahaha! Just kidding … thanks for the offer. I’ll start building this spare motor soon and then get it swapped in. Hopefully that will go down in the next 4-6 weeks. No emissions until 2027.

Can you imagine a carb’d 2F turbo kit though?! How silly would that be lol!

Was this just with a turbo install or engine rebuild and turbo install?

This one was engine rebuild with turbo install. We’ve had several non rebuilt turbo trucks make it through the gauntlet without issues but I have not been shown the numbers just know they passed

I do have a 2F in my 40 🤔

Honestly the manifold sits far enough away that you could likely just make a 3 bolt to T3 adapter and hang the turbo off of it…. Use the same internally wastegated turbo we use for the 80… maybe a slightly smaller housing… Holley sniper blow through, water to air IC that bolts on top, short intake tube to connect to the turbo….

Alright should we be stupid and actually do it? Start sending pistons out the bottom end

My turbo 80 failed for the first time in my 5 year ownership yesterday. Two years ago it had a new exhaust system with new cats and had the cleanest burning report I think I’ve ever seen. Now with both HC and NOx being high I don’t know where to start. Spark plugs cap and rotor I guess. I hope my cats aren’t done for already. I should take some temperature measurements

What turbo are you running? Are you burning/consuming oil? Timing advanced at all?

Safari Turbo system for the last 25 years. Nary an issue. Burns <1 quart every 5000 miles, so very little. Timing stock.
