My dad and I are still in for this trip. He's flying out on Tuesday and we will leave Wed AM after traffic dies down.

Are we camping every night or is there a hotel opport for one of the nights. Not sure how many nights my dad can make the camping thing work? We will see, but just in case!

Really looking forward to this trip.

We might be able to do a little mix of both I'm thinking.

At least one motel in Chama might let us camp out, or get cabins for the people so inclined....

We can camp close to the towns for the people that may not be up for camping all the nights. I'll probably head out early to get a head start. Looking forward to having you guys along!!

That can always be an option for wed night, especially if were checking out the town!

Perry, its getting close. Are there any definate plans yet on camping, etc? Also if we are going from Antonito to Chama, do we take the bus to Antonito early morning?

Thanks for pestering me on this:thumb:! I've been thinking about the camping situation a bit this week. With Paul's dad maybe not up for the full trip camping, would like to have us be close to Chama camping the first night. That way it'll be easy to get everybody together Thursday. I'm going to be going over the maps the next few days for some good possible let places for camping. Also hope Dan has some suggestions. For the train ride. We will be meeting up in Antonito to take the bus to Chama, and the train back to Antonito.

I'll post up some more thoughts after work.

So here's some thoughts I have:

I'm going to have two meet up times, one wed evening and the second, Thursday morning before we head out of Chama to chase the train. Meeting up Wed evening, if possible, would like to meet up before we head into Chama and check out the town, this way we can have camp all set up and don't have to worry about it after dinner and checking out the train yard.

Theres a camp we used for Outlaws last year that is somewhat close to Antonito. I'm thinking about using g this for Thursday night and possibly Friday. This way were still close to town, in case somebody chooses to stay in town one of the nights.

Saturday is planned to chase the train out of Antonito. Seeing how the group feels, how far in were able to go we can either camp around Antonito, or somewhere that puts us a little closer for the drive home Sunday.

I'm talking with Dan, and hopefully well have a group reservation that we can use for the train ride here in the next few days. For the train ride, we will be taking a bus from Antonito to Chama, then take the train from Chama back to Antonito, with a stop for lunch in Osier.

Excited for this trip!!

Perry:

I'll call you tomorrow I hope. Stupid work.

But get pumped!

This was yesterday. Repositioning the 463 to Antonito to pull the train westbound tomorrow, which is opening day.

You can see how much snow is left at the highest point of the line (Cumbres Pass), so we should be quite good for the camping spots Perry is talking about here.

We will be fine camping Wednesday near Chama as we will be tired from the drive down and should sleep well in the RTT. If we need a hotel break, it will likely be Friday night in Antonito. Is the plan still to chase the train on Thursday, ride the train on Friday, and chase or other again on Saturday before leaving to come home on Sunday?

So excited for this trip! And my dad is even more excited than I am. I wouldn't classify myself as a "train guy", but I certainly love to see my dad get so excited since he is really into it!

Had a good talk with Dan yesterday (sorry to not call you back, totally spaced). We decided to stay the first night in a "camping" spot in Chama. It's close to the train yard and will make finding the group Wed evening, Thursday Morning that much easier. We should have a group reservation set soon. Dan, was going to work on that, thanks for all your help!

Getting really excited for this trip! ready for a little break from work! Going to get new tires tomorrow.

Met up with Nathaniel yesterday and rode the Georgetown Loop. A fun little warm up!

Yep. The Rio Chama RV Park. It's about 1/4 mile north of the Chama Depot on Hwy 17. Almost impossible to miss. Easy walk from downtown Chama (and a couple of the hotels there if anyone is using them), and obviously the Chama yard.

We should have a group reservation set soon. Dan, was going to work on that, thanks for all your help!

Working on it indeed. I should have details up this afternoon, or tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks guys! What is the best way to go to Chama? It's probably longer (mileage) to cut off 285 through Del Norte and Pagosa, but it's all state highway. Or, obviously we could cut off on 17 and head down past Alimosa and cut over on the mountain road from Antonito to Chama? I'm sure we will drive that road a bit over the few days though ;)

Thanks!

Dan, cant remember if I told you the plan for the train route or not. But planning to do the same as we did for Outlaws. Bus from Antonito to Chama, Train from Chama to Anotnito. Lunch At Osier.

Paul, I was planning on doing the I-25 to Walsenburg, west to Alamosa and south to Chama. looking to be about a 5 hour drive.

The fastest route is to Alamosa, however you like. I personally choose between three routes to end up on 285 south to Alamosa. But I hate I-25 with a passion.

Once in Alamosa, follow 285 south to Antonito, and then take La Manga pass and Cumbres Pass to Chama. We will see that quite a lot on this trip.

I doesn't get old--it's VERY scenic. Taking 160 to Pagosa and then driving to Chama is also beautiful, but longer. It's roughly an hour from Pagosa to Chama. Also about an hour from Antonito to Chama.

If you have time to kill and want to see some scenery, keep on 285 south of Alamosa to Tres Piedras, then US-64 to Tierra Amarilla. In the fall that is one of the most amazing stretches of road I have ever driven. Absolutely beautiful. It will be the same in june, but without yellow leaves. :)

Perfect. I hate I-25 as well and my dad will probably want to to see the more scenic route.

Do we need to call and pay for anything for camping or for train tickets?

I will post something up about the tickets sometime Monday.

Basically, you will add yourself to my reservation and pay over the phone. That puts us all in the same car.

EDIT--and if your dad is into railroads, take 285. It follows the old DSP&P (later C&S) grade over Kenosha Pass, the Roundhouse in Como is still standing, etc...

Just one question:

Coach seats, Tourist seats, or Parlor seats?

Coach is cheapest.
Parlor doesn't allow anyone under 21 (I don't know if anyone is bringing kids)

I'm leaning towards Coach seats. But I'll give it until this afternoon for input, otherwise I'll make an executive decision on that front.

Dan

EDIT-coach seats. $44 less than tourist.

I trust your judgement, Dan. I've never seen the train, so hard for me to say. I've always been a "coach" kind of guy, though :)
