Dad and I would spend the day on the Benches and Mesa Tops North of Pueblo Bonito. Exploring the ruins of Pueblo Alto and New Alto. A mighty fine day out in the desert. .
I remember my Dad making some "Wishful Thinking" comment about this sign. Seeing the Elk the night before shut us up.
Still some color in the Desert.
Morning's light on Kin Kletso. Chacoan Great House, A.D 1125-1200.
Looking North. Great roads were built from Chaco to outlying communities. The "Great North Road" headed north from Chaco, ending at Salmon Ruin and the San Juan River.
New Alto.
Pueblo Alto. Chacoan Great House started around A.D 1020. Laid out in a "D" shape, it contained some 130 rooms and 18 Kivas.
Sherds found around Pueblo Alto. Remnants of Baskets and Pottery. They stay as they lay.
From the Benches, looking back down on Chaco Canyon.
Named after photographer William Henry Jackson. These stairs provided a continued access of the "Great North Road" to Chaco Canyon from the outlying communities.
I'd find myself captivated by these stairs. Knowing that not only have others passed this way, but someone sat there and chiseled away at the stone to make them.
