I know of two shops that were fined $850,000 and 1,000,000 for modifying multiple vehicles emissions systems. and harley davidson paid a $12milliond dollar fine for selling emissions defeating devices. other shops don't want that happening to them. fines can be up to $37,500 per violation (remove one cat = 1 violation, remove 2 cats = 2 violations, etc). i wouldn't want to find out.

Does anyone actually know of a person who has received a ticket or summons due to smog control tampering?
Well, yes. Hundreds of people in CA had their cars literally crushed. Cops would pull people over and open their hoods and if they saw something illegal then they would haul the car off to be crushed and fine the drivers. Luckily that doesn't seem to be happening here (yet). The ominous cloud of CARB is still hanging over our heads and that could start happening at the whims of our leaders.

Right now it seems that the enforcement is happening on the service side. Businesses are being fined and issued warnings etc like @nuclearlemon has said. I know of a dyno shop in CO that has been getting weird calls since 2018ish where people would call up and just start asking "will you remove my cats, can you delete my emissions equipment?" and very pointed questions like that and when he tries to talk to them about their goals etc their responses show they obviously don't know anything about cars but are just fishing for something illegal. It got to the point he was getting multiple calls like that a week.

They used the excuse of going after "street racers" but really they did it to as many modified cars as possible. Still goes on to this day. Recently a there are a bunch of videos going viral of CA cops pulling over 100% stock, unmodified, sports cars and inspecting them and issuing fix-it tickets.

So yes, it's happening to thousands of people. Maybe not in CO yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts.

"It won't happen to me, I drive a 4x4" is a bad attitude to have also. Guess what, if you put 35s on your truck then your emissions are going to go up.

I guess the cities are re-funding the police if they have time to do that ^. Right before we moved last year it took them 45 minutes to show up to my place while a drunk guy tried to beat down the back door.

You’re referencing the Hyundai velocter n car right? What ever happened to that mess? Guy literally owns a car that couldn’t be registered because of a stick up a cops ass?…

Check out the 3rd video I posted above, not only can that guy not drive his brand new stock car that's been approved by the DOT to operate in every state in the US, but now cops are targeting other Hyundais for the same thing.

Do you mean the Hyundai in Utah? There is one wrinkle, the owner removed the resonator so it's not 100% stock. The Utah State Trooper ticketed him for excessive noise and he has to have the UHP inspect it. Whether the resonator would have helped I don't know, though it sounds like Utah doesn't do the dB tester routine like California. So maybe he'll be fine as long as it is visibly stock. The one in California is weird because it is presumably 100% stock and didn't pass the sound level check. That seems like Hyundai's issue to resolve.

I thought so too. But it's actually one of 4 new ones there are throw-backs. There's black, blue and red. You can also get a green with white behind the mountains, the inverse of what we have now, which was the other alternating 1962 to 1999 plate originally. You can get any of them or from 2023 to 2027 the special sesquicentennial plate.

Can confirm that these are available and legal now. We have the black one on our 200 and the original 1962-99 on our 80. To get the green one you are forced into doing a customized plate. The black one reminds me of Texas more than California and Iowa also has a black plate with white letters.

AFR varies depending on conditions but it is usually around 12 when really flogging it, and low 15s when cruising down the highway. For instance, I just drove from Grand Junction up to Aspen today. It was around 90 degrees, AC on and going 80, and the AFR was around 14.8 - 15.2.

EGT today coming back up to Aspen was around 1000, which from my understanding is pretty normal.

Coolant temp was in the mid 190s, never hit 200.
Are the cats still hanging in?

I don't claim to be an authority at all, but that seems lean to me. What is AFR and EGT when you go WOT or on longer pulls with more throttle input? Recently heard of 2 different Tundras with the Maggie tvs1900 TRD blower having cats fail. I have a feeling the cats on my LX570 won't last long after I throw this smaller pulley on. Did you figure a solution for this yet?
