You wouldn't believe how long it took to figure out the oil leak our 40 developed, BTW.
We knew it was the remote mounted oil filter.
Problem was, it wasn't just a loose fitting. Turns out that Trans-A-Dapt gave us a defective hose. It's leaking internally to the fitting. It was leaking so much by the time I got home that the only way to figure out it was the hose itself vs the threads was to start the truck with me crawled up under it at the time to watch exactly where the oil was coming from.
Hopefully will have new hoses on monday or tuesday...
And yes, a Diehard Platinum (or any AGM) that is bad may be absolutely scorching hot as an indicator that it's bad. Not real sure how it went bad, but fixed anyway.

Glad you tracked down the leak, Dan. Any idea why the battery failed?
None whatsoever. It's sort of close to the turbo, but there's a good 3" of air space between them, plus a heat shield between the turbine section and the battery. Also, the hood louver is right above that area, so there should be pretty healthy airflow anytime the truck is making enough power to get the turbo toasty.
Am trying a group 65 instead this time. Just a little weaker, but a lot smaller. That gives it another 1/2" of air space or so.

Odyssey makes the Sears Platinum, correct? Odyssey makes two versions of most of their own AGM batteries, I believe, and the only difference between the two is a full metal jacket - FMJ - for use in high heat installations. Turbos do get hot!
Enersys makes the Diehard Platinum line that Sears sells. Enersys also makes the Odyssey.
I really don't think it was a problem with proximity to the turbo. Won't know for sure until I get the new oil lines made (stupid weekend!) and can run the engine, but when I put the bad battery on a trickle charge, it still gets to being absolutely scorching hot. And it took about two days too cool down once I got it home (the battery that is).

I'm the dark gray with hartop and Wildneress rack. Been a long time since the inaugural run due to me trying to catch it on fire (oops. dead short to the gauge cluster), and cleaning up what happens when a 40 sits for 9 years before you can get a hold of things.

Martin, the blue 40 with the red gas can on the back is Steve. Forum handle is 066Wally and his rig is a 1969. IIRC, it has been in his family a long time. Both Steve and Tim are sporting the old style collectors plates.
