The W's:

When: July 23rd- 26th.

Where: Creed, CO.

Why:

A long time ago Nathaniel Miller started the Ghost Town Run. Where we go out and explore old towns, mining and railroad history that can be found in Colorado's backcountry. It's been fun leading it the last few years and in 2021, it brought us down to the wonderful town of Creed. I feel it's time to get back there. Well spend the weekend checking out the sites and a big push this year will be to get to spend some time exploring the Wheeler Geological area.

Base Camp; Base Camp: 37°47'29.9"N 106°46'51.4"W ( also try: 106°46'51.4"W 37°47'29.9"N )

Limiting group to 12 rigs.

Our last trip down to Creede was fantastic. I can’t wait to go back.

Looks like parts of Mineral County, certain parts of the San Juan National Forest, are under a Stage 1 fire restriction. But it looks to me like the area around Creede isn't currently under that restriction. With any luck, it will stay that way through our trip. We'll see.
It looks like, at least for the next two weeks, they should at least be cloudy the whole time and have at least a reasonable chance of rain showers on several days. So hopefully that continues into July.

Bristol Head was a fantastic spot.
I'd definitely be ok going back there again if there was a consensus.

The road to Wheeler Geologic Area is a cool drive. It's an in and out, not too hard, but definitely time consuming.
I believe its about a mile hike, from the end of the road, to get to where the cool rock formations start.
I can see how exploring that area would easily eat up a full day, starting before dawn.

Copper Falls is another close by place that might be cool to go check out. ( 37°38'50.35"N , 107° 3'43.26"W )

I'd like to get back to Wheeler Geologic. Would be a long day and early start is good. I'd want at least 2 hours for exploring there.
An alternative is to expedition camp. Roll to new camp each day. GTRs have done that before. Plenty of great areas along those roads to and from Wheeler Geo.

I'm pretty sure you can camp at the trailhead for the WGA.
If we go over there, it would probably not be a bad idea if we just took all our camping stuff, so we could just camp there for the night.
Again, the road in there from the main road is pretty long and slow.
Just an idea.

It would be fun to have you as our local resident guid!

Hope to make it. Right now have to be a maybe.

Always fun to have you along.

Great event, so is the Ghost Town Run:) Make them both.

I've been reading that there calling for a super El Nino this year, and hopping that's the case. Seems like the moisture has picked up.

I'm open to suggestions. Have never been, and would really like to have a decent amount of time to explore.

Awesome!

The Bachelor Loop and the drive out to the waterfall is fantastic. Think we also did the Mining Museum one day. I would love to get back to Bristol Head since that's such a fantastic spot.

Are there any more plans for this trip? Maybe an itinerary? I hope to join you guys for a day, since ‘I’m down there anyway.
Reagan lake and ghost lake are also close trips that are well worth the effort.

Sadly, with the current extreme conditions facing the American West, and Colorado, feel it best to cancel this yeas Ghost Town Run. With no snow pack, little moisture, I've been worried about this year. The Cumbres and Toltec postponed opening day and a recent weekend due to the drought. Pretty much things are extreme out there and I don't feel right.

Yes, the club I trust 100%, But what happened this last week in my beloved state, I can't.

Perry, while saddened, I support your decision 100%. My family is still going to our cabin down there, but there will be no evening fires in the pit this year (there will probaby still be a beer or two in the evening though) . I could not imagine being responsible, even if accidental for a fire anywhere. The reasons that I go to Creede is a love of the area. I want the next generation to enjoy it as well. Perry, I feel you chose wisely.
