So I got this cool treat from @Curly! I don’t really have time for another project, but why not. It will be fun to commute to the shop this summer via moped.

So far I’ve disassembled it and put is a solid order at treatland.

I did a mild 43mm kit cause the piston and cylinder were smoked.

I got a cable kit, gasket kit, carb kit (and jets) some wiring tidbits, and seal kit for the rear gear. I’d love to be able to hit 35mph with this hog on the way to the shop.

Cleaned the tank the best I could today, washed, and bored the crabulator out to 13mm added a slight taper to the inlet and outlet 3deg in 10deg out. Made my first best guess on emulsion tube holes and main jet.

Pb blasted the handlebar wedgie thing cause the handle bars are seized in the headset doohickey hopefully that comes apart.

The headlight still works haha, but swapping it for an led setup

You're obviously the right person to have this project, sir.

Does it have a generator or a battery? Some LED headlights are super finicky with old motorcycle electrical systems.

It’s a mag setup. I spun it up with a drill and was seeing about 5-17vac, so I bought a cheap AC-DC bridge and buck and found a landscape LED lamp that can handle an IP of 10-36v it’s an experiment, but all the numbers work out on paper.

Cool. What magneto is it running?!
That second item link should definitely help. Nifty find in the landscape lighting, I never would have thought to look in landscaping hardware. Lol!

It’s the factory Vespa piaggio coil setup. I think they went to a CDI and battery setup a few years later. It’s all pretty new to me, but have been looking at mopeds for a while 😃

@VoodooBlue_Vixen do you have any old motorcycles or mopeds?

I found this wiring diagram, it’s pretty funny! I also found an NOS horn and light switch 😃. It was missing it with some cut and spliced wires

I have a 1949 Harley Panhead chopper that I'm in the process of building & a 1976 Harley Shovelhead that I raked & chopped.
Wiring on the old bikes is SUPER simplistic. You might need an Aoogha horn for that little scooter! Lol

So the magneto output is or isn't already rectified?

That thing you got from Bezosmart is probably not helpful and might work against you. With such a wide range of inputs I'm thinking that the LED lamp may have it's own PWM inside. It should not need the DC-DC in that case and might work against you feeding a switcher with another switcher.

If the magneto is unrectified AC all you need is a couple of diodes and a cap, even a bridge like they put to allow AC into that DC-DC is kind of overkill and doubling your drop unnecessarily (you'll drop 2 x diodes per cycle, so ~1.4V less than Vpeak).

If you can tell the part number on the bridge you might find a datasheet but cheap rectifiers often have appallingly slow recovery so you might get reasonably DC as idle but at speed it'll be barely DC. They are intended for 60 Hz and might extend performance out to perhaps 400 Hz. By 1 KHz they often aren't doing much anymore.
