Windshield pitting question

This is getting scarier the more I research. I've only noticed a spot on the A pillar on the driver side BUT I pulled back some of the trim at the top and there is some black thick tape looking stuff so I have a feeling that this has already had a bandaid put on it......It's a total mystery box till the windshield is pulled which means she would be down for the count for an indeterminate period of time which currently is not something I could do as I only have a company vehicle for a second vehicle and I'm looking for a new job that might require me to use a personal vehicle (if it's one where I have to drive a lot I'm going to get a second vehicle).

Go to an independent glass shop and they’ll square you up. Chances are the rust is there because the likes of safelight etc did a poor job installing the window.

Probably. I'm just worried that they get the windshield off and I'm quoted a bill I can't pay.... And here I thought y'all were just talking about them doing a poor job that leaked...

Call Blue Crush already, they will get you squared away.

I plan on it. Does anyone else know of shops of the same caliber further South?

Yup, shoulda just called them in the first place although I'm kinda glad I took it to safelite in a way because I was able to at least inform Blue Crush what potential issues they are dealing with and safelite didn't charge me. 270 for install and 50-100 if things aren't too bad when he pulls up the glass (really crossing my fingers here lol). I was expecting A LOT worse than that, and he's coming to my home. At the least we can get a stopgap solution in place while I learn how to weld lol, I think the chances are quite low that it's the worst case of it being completely rotted though, nothing else on this truck is properly rotted.

I think I got myself a little too worked up by looking at too many horror stories from the rust belt lol.

Terry got me all straightened out in little over an hour and it was the same price safelite quoted after I threw him some money for a tip. Thankfully the rust wasn't really bad at all, just some surface rust actually underneath the windshield. Thanks again for the recommendation. Nice to have the peace of mind of knowing what was under there.

Glad you got away from safelite. Last time I went there it ended with the hood being repainted from damage after the 3rd leaking windshield was removed.

And lots of haggling for them to cover the paint damage. I was told its "normal" for older vehicles to be damaged during the removal process, and that my 80 was likely not worth enough to be worried aboit the paint.

I’ve used Safelite for three insurance replacements - 1999 Audi A4, 2007 RAV4, and 2006 4Runner. I must either be an idiot or a slow learner. Every damn one has been a total pos. Really bad wavy optics is my biggest complaint. Fortunately, they didn’t trash the cars during R&R, but the quality of the glass is purely fecal. Never again.
