You can easily clean the metal.

throw an 80 grit sanding pad on an orbital sander and spend some time on it. I'd say it'll clean up perfectly - then coat it with WD40 and let it soak in. Repeat the WD40 or silicone spray every month or as needed.

A belt or orbital sander will work great. Diablo makes great pads for it
