Update. The Merrell boots are working out great! There have been two "storms" since I started using them. This morning's snow was not deep, but just the right depth that in tennis shoes it would go flat under my foot and slipping would ensue. The tread and soles on these boots "grip" and there is no slipping at all.

We love Merrells pretty much the only shoes that my boys don’t destroy within 3 weeks. I’ve got quite a few pairs myself, they are great and really hold up well over time
