Valley Plate Leak

Has anyone dealt with the coolant valley plate leak on their GX or Tundra? I'm fairly sure my wife's 2013 GX has the leak since I've been topping off the coolant overflow tank for the last 20-30k miles. But I have no visible signs of a leak on the back of the engine as it has been identified by most. I put in a new radiator not too long ago and I don't see any leaks or issues around it. Curious if others have identified the issue, fixed it themselves, outsourced to someone (who?). Not sure how else I can confirm without removing the intake.

TIA

It took forever on ours before we finally were able to see the evidence of the leak. I'm talking about like 6 months of believing that's what it was, and topping off coolant before we finally were able to see the dried-up residue of the coolant leaking out back there. I don't recall what the process was out posted out there for confirming, but we knew it wasn't a head gasket & we weren't getting any coolant in the oil or out of the tailpipe, so we eventually confirmed based on others expertise. When we finally took it in we were putting in a gallon every 5-600 miles, so it was due for sure. I toyed with trying it myself, but ended up farming it out due to the number of plastic bits that had to be removed & moved out of the way to do it all. I figured I'd end up with the truck down a year while trying to keep ordering small parts & then get back to it, etc.... We ended up taking it to Boulder Toyota (or whatever they call it now), based on the premise that they should also know the motor well enough & we didn't have to go all the way to a Lexus dealership. If I had to do it again, I'd go to the Lexus dealership. The boulder Toyota location was a huge pain in the ass to deal with, and the screwed things up & had to redo a bunch of stuff for free.

Avoid Corwin Toyota in Boulder for anything other than parts emergencies. My opinion based on experience. Hoshi Motors in Boulder is a very good independent shop, for those near Boulder.

You can probably inspect for a leak using a flexible borescope camera. I was able to do this on the 5.7L before I bought my LC.

Funny that's the first thing my wife said. She took her old Honda there for everything back at their old location in town.

Don't have one but I'm sure I can track one down somewhere....

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm with you on the DIY/outsource debate at this point. Boulder Toyota is pretty convenient for me, but yea, that's not a good endorsement.

I’m a bit ignorant on later model stuff. Which engine are we taking about? I’d like to ask my friend/neighbor who is the Subaru guru at Hoshi if he’s aware of the issue, and/or if he has a recommendation. If you don’t mind. He also has worked on a lot of Toyotas, once known as the King of the 2F, but also later vehicles.

It's the 4.6 V8 in my case (in 2010+ GX's and some Tundra's). And I think some of the direct injection V8 Lexus' as well. I'm not sure if the 5.7 also has the issue.

Under the intake at the top of the block there's a little coolant valley that's sealed with FIPG. Either the FIPG fails and/or the machining on the plate is sub-par and so coolant starts to leak out. Usually it just dries up into pink grainy stuff, but if the leak gets bad enough it'll start dripping down the back of the motor.

Hey Hey- I just had this done on my daughter's 2010, gx460 (170K). We went 2 years topping off the expansion tank, I trimmed the plastic cover to give access to the tank. I have all the parts list and the instruction file printed to PDF from mud I can share if you want to message me. I had a mechanic do it as that is above my skillset as he was also doing the timing belt on my Tundra (also above my skill set)... Its a 2 day job, as it needs time to dry...

Nice, looks like you caught it earlier than some people. Are you DIYing it?
It’s done. Not puking coolant so the inlet pipe o rings must have set in ok. Replaced some coolant hoses, knock sensor harness and PCV parts “while I was in there.” The worst part was the firewall side manifold bolt. Glad it’s done.

FWIW, friend of mine in Louisville also likes Hoshi Motors.
