Yeah, I think I'd rather have a short bed.

...

Wow. It's hard to believe anything rides worse than a 40.
The long bed ain't THAT long, and don't write off a clean one if you find it. FWIW the longbed rides nicer.
The ride is entirely dependent on the springs. Put some springs from Alcan on (if you want spendy but extremely nice), or Marlin or AllPro springs on, and ride like silk. Oh, yeah, and crossover steering. You just need an IFS steering box, easy to put on (strengthening kits available), and I can help with that.

The one I looked at last night was a long bed. The front springs were worse than flat -- they were actually inverted. That said, it still rode OK. You're right: the long bed didn't seem all that long.

Pretty common. They came almost inverted from the factory and didn't take long to go inverted! You won't find one without a rusty bed, my '82 started the cancer before it was five years old. The beds were US made in an attempt to avoid tariffs. And you could see the difference in the workmanship. The bedside downward extension seams attracted water and started rusting right away.

One thing to consider is one of the way cool flatbed designs out there. They needn't be redneck in appearance, and can be the equivalent of a 4x4-oriented utility bed. Then you can bob the rear and have none of the disadvantages of a long wheelbase (except the center just a bit, but no showstopper). Just sayin'.

Or you can go here for fiberglass beds that will never rust, and are quite well made:

This sounds dumb, but I'm going for cute. I'll probably give it a medium height lift with some bigger tires, but the overall exterior look will be close to stock. Flatbed won't be an option, but those fiberglass beds might be awesome! Thanks for the link -- lots of things to learn.

I understand the intent! Kind of a classic car thing with a 4x4 outlook. Like a 3" lift, crossover, and 33s? You can do a lot of wheeling and still keep it nice with a setup like that.

I'm going a tad that way (cute) myself, but with a steroid injection.

No joke. What is the deal? Bad MPG and high gas prices? People ditching the 60's for new FJ's? After seeing the price of these, makes me think I should look into getting one while the getting is good!
