Likely due to the flat towing. The tow bar connection points are below the front bumper.

Mini trucks (and I think old Cruisers, too) drive their speedometers from a gear in the t-case that will spin any time the driveshafts are. Good to know since those miles are still wearing the drivetrain by spinning. In a 1992+ mini truck the odometer is electronic so you wouldn't know.
