I'm not trying to boast, it was just another suggestion to your solution. Usually 65-70 up passes with power left to pass. Forget no turbo. 70 non turbos, 3B and 1HZs are extremely slow but will outlive...well...pretty much humans. Fairly easily turbo'd though.
Cold starting the 1HD-T was a miraculous thing, can't speak for the 12HT. I started it with no block heater and no antigel in -15 and it did not even stutter or choke like most diesels, ready to roll off the bat. Started better than the 60 does cold, that's for sure. Only other diesel I've seen start like that cold, was a Volvo. Ideally you'd run some power services antigel and that would get you sweet.

The GM/Ford failures I see at work everyday are laughable...Uncle Ben :D ...In all seriousness your 80 is so much fun and I know its reliable.

I'll just say, I love my 60 the most. The 2f gives you that awesome feeling that just doesn't come from anything else.
My opinion...We buy old land cruisers because of the awesome looking, slow, reliable, and heart stopping feeling that no other truck will give you. Not to mention it dives you into the greatest community of folks you'll ever meet. If it were me, I'd forget the 2FE save the cash and time for something more worth it. Throw a block heater in the 2f, maybe a 5 speed, tune the carb for altitude, enjoy the awesome 40 God gave you, and run it till the body falls off. Again, just my opinion. I'm no expert, if you're set on a 2FE, go for it!

My 60 with the 5.3 swap has taken a serious beating over its 140k mike swap life. 365k total on the truck now. I’m talking probably hours bouncing off the rev limiter and sitting at 6k rpm. Desert driving it a rev limiter bouncy big downshift deep past 6k on accident regular Occurrence. All it has is a set of cheap comp cams springs and pushrods.

It has been dead reliable.

Gets me 18mpg doing 70 in a 6500lb truck with 35’s.

Going 80-85..... more like 14. It suffers a lot pushing big air sure..

It’ll do 85 up vail or Eisenhower at 6k on the Mat in 3rd all day long. In fact I stick it in third and leave it there in the fast lane till I crest the hill. Too fun not to. I’ve cooked 4 t cases. Intermediate shaft thrust washers just die from the loads and lack of oil under the heavy side loading. H55 is still happy. That’s after lots of burnouts too.. and towing in 5th a lot. Been through a few rear ends also.

While I am definitely a stock Toyota proponent I have to say the LS motors are dreamy. Hell the stock truck blocks, even the crappy early generation ones take 700hp with no mods. The later ones take 900. Stock. Same rods. Same crank. New head bolts sure.

In stock non boosted form they rock. Throw in a cheap eBay OEM Cam from a corvette or something and you’ve got a nice motor that doesn’t fall on its face after 5k like mine.

If I had your 40 I’m not sure why I would do honestly. Probably depends on what I was doing with it of course..

The 1hdt and h151 combo, with it h2 type t-case will not fit in a 40, talked about a 12 inch drive shaft??? Offset of the t-case is also too much, not really aligning with the rear axle too well, unless you want a more custom rear axle. Also with that type of torque, you would want a full floating rear axle. All of this is opinion, but based on doing this job once and spending tones of time, effort to make a customer what he wants. Took all the tool in my toy box to make work as well, and lots of Hr of BVB as well. Not
I did fit a 1hdt with H55 and split case with lots of work, it is not a direct bolt in, tight fit for the fan, and other bits. Ended up with a 18inch drive shaft.
Yes, newer chevy's are typically more reliable than the old crate motors of the day.
really at the end for he day, it really is about maintainance.
I have done a couple of 2FE's with good results, but it does take time, and all the parts, one wiring full harness from one vehicle, pick one and make it work(either FJ62 or FJ80 either have there issues).
One thing that I do not like about the Toyota set up is no knock sensor to help protect the engine. O2 sensor is basic at best, and the air flow meter does an OK job, not great mind you, but OK. I do like the suggestion of the TB style with better O2, knock sensor ability, and better programing ability(which you will not get with the 3fe set up).
As with any swap, it pays to be the person doing it, as you will know the issues before hand, and hopefully be able to patch it up when it breaks on the trail.
