Hey Fort Collins friends,

Karie and I are planning a trip to Fort Collins in late September to celebrate our 20th anniversary. (Why Fort Collins? We've always wanted to check out the town. Plus beer.)

What are things we should not miss doing while we're there? I'm thinking restaurants, hikes, bicycle trails, activities, museums, shops, shows, music, etc. And of course, breweries!

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.

Don't stick to just brewery tours...There is Fiesty Spirits Distillery, and Copper Muse Distillery. Enjoy a small and quick tour, and then enjoy the tasting rooms...

Last time I was there, we ate at a dessert and coffee only place that was out of this world. It was a small but well put together place. Far from a "hole in the wall."

I don't remember the name, but maybe someone will. Best tiramisu I've ever had hands down. And top notch creme brûlée

I'm thinking it was right off of college ave

I'll ask my brother in law, they live up there and have fun. I remember him saying the distilleries were neat too though. He went to a place that had rum that was outstanding. edit: googled and it looks like Copper Muse as mentioned above.

Waffle lab. Started as a food trailer, now has a actual restaurant. Unique and good food.

From My Brother in Law:

Not sure how long they'll be here or what days of the week but:

new belgium brewery tour (have to book way ahead)
odell brewery (tour is not as good but great spot regardless)
mayor of old town-awesome bar with great...extensive beer selection
mtb bike trail recommendations depending on skill level...easy: valley trails at lory state park, blue sky; intermediate: add indian summer, some of devils backbone; advanced: bobcat ridge
rent stand up paddle boards/otherwise on horsetooth reservoir
catch some music at avo's/avogadro's number
museum of discovery was fun-at least/especially with cam so not sure for just adults/depends on exhibits
stroll along the poudre river/poudre trail (or get some bikes from the bike share and do this among other/all things via bike)
if you like vegetarian food options, go to Tasty Harmony; "nice" italian: Rare; The Kitchen is also here if that's not something you've had
Chocolate at Nuance
Rum at coppermuse distillery

That's a good start...

You could head up the canyon to a show at the Mishawaka, head up to Cameron Pass and look for moose, or check out Red Feather Lakes.

My days and nights in Ft Collins mostly blend together. I don't remember much, but remember I had A LOT of fun. The few things I remember, I can't really talk about in public and would not be good for your family Hulk :)

Sorry...no help!

I have been on the Odell Brewery tour and it was fun.

Lots to love in FC!

If you like breweries, there are many:
  • New Belgium - have you some Fat Tire
  • O'Dells
  • Fort Collins Brewery
  • Coopersmiths - located in Old Town, complete with bar, dining room and pool hall
  • Budwiser - thats right, you can tour a Budwiser brewery north of town at the Mtn Vista exit. They usually have at least on Clydesdale there - cool!

Fiery Spirits was mentioned as well for a whiskey distillery - fun tour.

Old Town - lots to see and do. There is an open area with a band shell. In Old Town you will find the Lyric Cinema - they show cool old movies and sell beer for your movie watching pleasure. Don't forget the Town Pump - coolest bar anywhere.

Go to CSU campus where you will simultaneously wish you were back in college/feel old/thank God you are not in college. Good times... Go for a hike out by CSU's foothills stadium. This is the last year the Rams will play there, then they will demolish it. Too bad... Hike the A Trail from the stadium up to Horsetooth Reservoir - maybe bring a picnic lunch?

Go to the drive-in movies! Yep, we still have one. Very nice, delicious burgers from the snack bar!

You can also run up 287 to Laramie. That is a nice drive.

Have fun Matt - congrats!

Skip the Museum of Discovery if it's just you and Karie. The local blood center, Garth Englund, where I do my platelet donations threw an appreciation dinner last fall there. It was interesting but I'd think would be far more enjoyable with kids old enough to appreciate history and science, say 6 to maybe 12. Two adults on an anniversary trip - nope.

For culture, check out the Lincoln Center to see if anything's going when you're here. It'll probably be La Bete, which is playing now.

The Aggie Theater is downtown FoCo and that's where the big names would play. But rarely would there be anything there you don't already get touring through Denver. As mentioned, Avogadro's would be a better choice for a random drop-in night. Plus they have food, tables and you can hear acoustic & folk and still make a night cap downtown.

Another place I think is neat is the Center for Fine Art Photography. Not sure if there's an exhibition currently but if so that's worth a stop.

Do try to see a movie at the Holiday Twin (the drive-in) some time, but last weekend was the last of the season unfortunately.

You can do the standard brewery tour and that's all well and good but if you want to just check out some local places there's so many more than just those now. I'll admit without reservation that hanging out at New Belgium's outside beer garden is fun on a nice day...

Regulars on our rotation are Zwei (Harmony and College), Prost and Coopersmith (Old Town) as well as Grim Brothers, Big Thompson, Big Beaver (all in Loveland). Only Coopersmith's has a full menu restaurant, but most usually have a food truck.

I also like The Whiskey downtown in Fort Collins, which is as the name implies a whisk(e)y bar. They have a decent menu, too.

I'm not sure there's really anything up here that is a don't miss compared to Denver as far as food. We like Canino's on College south of downtown for italian. It's not as hip (which is good IMHO) and I thought the food is at least typical of the average you'd find on The Hill back in St. Louis. It's not Zia's, Gitto's or Gian-Tony’s, but it's pretty good.

We like The Next Door (Door 222 now, thanks to the stupid place in Boulder suing them over naming rights) here in Loveland. Their menu is very fresh and very local. The woman who runs our CSA, Amy, sells her excess produce to them and that's pretty typical of the source for their ingredients, hyper local farms. Same goes for our butcher, The Bull and Boar, who gets his beef and pork from a single rancher in north Fort Collins. They don't have a restaurant per say, but a deli counter. The beef brisket sandwich is $5 super well spent.

Darn, the Holiday Twin is closed for the season - huge bummer! It feels like they closed early this year.
At least we got to see TMNT and Angry Birds. We always try to make at least one night there per summer.
Dave has some good ideas. If you are going beyond the Fort, High Hops is a nice little brewery in Windsor, complete with live music and food trucks.
At the other end of the spectrum is the 4th Street Chop House in historic, downtown Loveland - old school.

Thanks for the heads up about booking in advance. We're now booked for the 4:00 tour on Monday, the day we arrive.

Good call. We'll miss La Bete since it's Fri/Sat/Sun, but I bought tix to go see Whose Live Anyway, the touring version of Whose Line Is It Anyway.

Thanks, guys! Much appreciated. I will keep exploring these ideas.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. Karie and I just returned from our 4-day trip to Fort Collins, and we had a very nice trip.

  • The New Belgium tour is the best brewery tour I've ever taken. They also have an amazing selection of sours right now. We brought 4 big bombers home.
  • O'Dells has a great patio, and the Umami food truck dinner was delicious.
  • Zwei Brewery was great. Also, the ProVelo bike shop next door was very friendly and helpful.
  • Lyric Cinema was a great suggestion. We saw Ron Howard's documentary about the touring years of the Beatles, "Eight Days A Week" and enjoyed fine beers and bratwurst.
  • We visited the Town Pump for a quick beer. This definitely looks like a place the whole RS club would pack into after a run. We were especially amused by 40 years of humorous bumper stickers, including "Nuke the Gay Whales for Jesus."
  • We drove up the Poudre canyon. Hiked around the Gateway Natural Area (owned by the city of Fort Collins). Stopped by Mishawaka just to look around. Looks like a cool place to see a show.
  • Did an 18-mile bike ride loop along the Horsetooth Reservoir, starting with Centennial Drive / N Co Rd. 23. There are some steep climbs on that road!
  • Mayor of Old Town has a wall of tappers. Very impressive. Cool mid-century vibe there, too.
  • Had dinner at Enzios Italian Kitchen, which was decent.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We didn't get to them all -- we will have to schedule a return visit!

I was thinking about this the other day Matt, wondering how it went. Good to hear about the trip!

It's very NoCo since just about every one of your stops involved beer in some way.
