Anyone had any experience with one of these?

picture.php

I was thinking about one of these with a 5lb tank. I hate having lots of stuff and like to stay mobile so I can't bring myself to buy a for real grill... and the really small ones only work with the disposable cylinders (as far as I know) and that just aint very ecologically responsible.

Any thoughts?

In-laws have one and it works great for cookouts at Chatfield and such...AFAIK though they always use the disposale cylinders though. Anyway, a lot more surface area for cooking (usually grilling up enough stuff for up to 10 people) than the small ones but the penalty there is the size and weight.

I have one of those that I use with my motorhome. Enough heat and works pretty good with the different grills. My wife gave it to me for a birthday present, however if I had to buy now, I would get the Cadac The Carri Chef Grill. Cadac is like Coleman in South Africa. The Chef grill has a multitude of grilling surfaces and is actually made for travel. Each grill element has it's own bag and the whole thing fits in a bag.

The problem with the Coleman is that the grease ends up on the shield around the burners and it is not removable. That makes cleaning a pain as well as transportation. All the elements on the Cadac is removable and can be cleaned separate. It has a wok for stir fries, grills etc etc. Can be bought at Camping worlds and other stores. About the same price.

They also have a smaller version that might be ideal for tailgating

I saw the little one at Camping world and nearly ran off with it. I just need to check if it will fit in our storage place and I am getting one.

My folks use one when they don't want to fire up their big green egg. they have a really nice weber that is permanently mounted that they hardly use after having bought it. They use the disposables, but you can get an adapter for a bulk cylinder....

One thing to mention also is that you can refill the disposables off of a bulk cylinder at home with one of these:

if the disposable is really empty they work pretty well.

Christo nailed it, cleaning it sucks. Otherwise the Coleman works great and I really like the optional griddles that you can switch out with the grills. The only other downside is the low lid clearance. You only have about 4 or 5 inches from the grill to the lid, so you can't do tall items. No beer can chicken on this baby. :hill:

Wow, thanks for all the great info guys. That Cadac is pretty sweet. 250 bones is a bit too much for me though. My $$ is going into the runner. There was a couple like the one I pictured on Craigslist for about $75. Maybe I will hold out a bit longer though, and see what pops up.
