In 2018 failing for High CO with 79 and limit was 45, subsequently passing with a CO of 9.5 after doing the following
  • I switched the carb for another rebuilt one I had as a spare, since it got a bunch of crap in it from the lines going to the HAC and smog pump strands of something got into my air cleaner (I have another spare just for this scenario, I might put it on if I don't pass again)
  • replaced fouled spark plugs and air filter (yes fouled then too)
  • static timing set to 7 deg and HAC pulling constant 6 deg = 13 deg total. I retarded it a bit. I didn't say by how much, but I'm guessing 2-3 degrees
  • I replaced the bad bushing on the dizzy so the advance mechanism didn't start early and end late from the disintegrated bushing
  • I did the lean drop but left it when the A/F ratio was 13.5 cruising at 35, 45, 55 mph, meaning a little richness isn't necessarily the culprit
AFTER passing in 2018 I replaced the secondary spring for a weaker one to get the secondaries to open. It was a noticeable power improvement.
  • I need to go back to the stiffer spring so they don't open again!

Edit: other notable things I had written about the experience that might help other people

I had passed for CO originally at this Jan 2018 test but failed for the gas cap. I drove directly to Toyota a mile away and picked up the cap and drove directly back immediately to retest. Only after returning to the smog station did I fail for high CO. This tells me all the crap that got into the carb happened then, as I had put a newly rebuilt carb on before testing. Yes, I had/have 3 carbs. One newly rebuilt on the truck, one newly rebuilt on the shelf and ready to switch out if I have a problem, and one ready to be rebuilt, clean but in parts.

Also, upon performing the lean drop on the original carb, the mix screw was turned out 5 turns which is way too far out at our altitude, and now thinking back, I had put my hand or cardboard over the air horn and the truck didn't die. So there was a major leak around the intake/carb. I didn't write it in my bullets above, but
  • I had to buy some gaskets from Kurt at Cruiser outfitters to put around the bottom insulator, and the middle insulators even though the bottom insulator was fairly new and I thought it should be sealing, it wasn't
After these steps I went from 79 CO to 9.5

@fj60princess Look up Engineer8000 on Mud. For a small fee you send him your smog “computer” and he fully repairs and tests it. I may have a spare I can loan you for the process. As long as I get one back in the same condition, we’re good.

That guy can fix any of the older electronics systems - AC computers, vintage radios, etc. FYI.

Yeah he’s the guy I found on EBay! My computer is working with the exception of possibly the circuit for the fuel cut so I’m going to buy one from him. Thanks for the offer!!!!!

Edit: I have done the green wire mod to ground the FCS but it’d be great to get that system working properly again

Turn the key to the “on” position. Does the FCS click when you disconnect and reconnect the wiring harness connector that goes to it?

Hi CruiserTrash, yes it clicks. I did the mod many years ago when it was stalling when i decelerated. But I’m hoping with the new ECU from Engineer8000 I can fix it to where I don’t need the mod anymore (my vacuum switch works). Also, once I get the ecu I’ll take mine off and check for bad solder joints. Should be fun.

Just to duplicate what I have on ‘mud

For those of us at altitude I forgot I had this little tool from Mikuni. I’m not sure I’m using it exactly right, but it looks to me like I should put a 140 into the carb at my altitude andwork up from there to see if it helps keep the plugs from fouling.

@Cruisertrash pointed out on ‘mud “ I see the point of going up or down in size, although many vehicles have systems built in to compensate for elevation. So if you installed the jet appropriate to your elevation (according to this sheet), then the HAC would make you far too lean. It’s a dance.”

So I’m going to plug the inlets to the carb from the HAC but keep the 6 deg advance when I start messing with the jets. I mean you can go down the rabbit hole of temperature and altitude too!

Thanks again - hope to meet some of you in the future

-Anne
