BLUERIBBON COALITION ACTION ALERT! Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,
BLM Seeks Local Input On Travel Management Plan For The San Luis Resource Area
The San Luis Valley Public Land Center composed of the Rio Grande National Forest and the San Luis Valley Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking comments on the San Luis Resource Area Travel Management Environmental Assessment. The EA is proposing changes that would be made to the Resource Management Plan (RMP) and also establish a "designated trail system."
Recently completed travel plans on BLM lands in the Arkansas Basin were not well received by the OHV community. The Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition (COHVCO) (www.cohvco.org/) has expressed concerns about the non-motorized focus of many of the proposals. It appears that unfair and arbitrary standards are being imposed on motorized trails.
It would be easy to assume that anti-access groups, and perhaps agenda driven agency employees, are primarily responsible for unfair and arbitrary closures. That may well be true, however, it may also true that motorized enthusiasts are not sufficiently involved in these planning processes.
The BLM will be holding three public meetings to give the public the opportunity to ask questions and make comment on this proposal. (See schedule below) We strongly encourage you to try to attend the meetings or at least give the BLM a call to find out how to get involved in the process.
If you recreate in the San Luis Resource Area groups like BRC and COHVCO can help you protect your roads and trails. We also encourage you to give us a call should you have questions or need help navigating the BLM's planning process.
The San Luis Valley Public Lands Center will accept public comments through September 17, when the 30-day public comment and review period ends. Comments may be submitted via e-mail to: Mark_Swinney@co.blm.govor mailed to:
