If the weather stays nice this week, we'll have no problems. No matter what we'll be able to make it up to the dinner/camping site, and depending on conditions everyone can then choose to stop there, or go on up the hill..

Yes, there's camping. :camping: It's "primitive" camping, so bring a portable toilet if you've got one, and bring warm stuff, see the winter camping tips thread for suggestions :camping: :campfire:
And the road's easy enough to the site that your offroad popup camper would make it up there, and you'll be able to unhook it prior to the real wheeling.

There's also a cookout/potluck dinner. Please bring something to share, including tables, paper towels, and trash bags. A 10x10 and a big tarp would make a great wind shelter if it gets blowing.. which it can. Though today was just about perfect up there but hey a week can change everything.

Difficulty I'll give it a 4 out of 10? Maybe a couple of the spooky prerunners from today will have something to add here.. I used my rear locker a couple times, but was seeing if I could get crossed up in a few places, enough to not go. yup :D a stock 60 with good driver could do the whole thing. If it doesn't get any snowier up there. We'll have a good idea once we get to the camp site, what it'll be like further up.

Idaho Springs Safeway, 3:30, Saturday. Be sure to dress up those trucks, and make sure the dogs and kids are full of gas, and on their best behavior. It's spooky time.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I'm a "maybe." If everything goes as planned earlier in the day, I'll be back in time. Otherwise I'll be running late, maybe too late to get stuff together to camp. In which case I'd likely run up to the camping area just to say hello, before I head 20 minutes back down the road to give the cats some company at home. ;)

We shall see....

It's Sarah's 21st Birthday Saturday. I asked if she wanted to do this, but she wants us to take her to a nice restaurant. You all have fun

Nice seeing you too Martin!!

It was a beautiful day up there, this weekend should be nice as well. If it doesn't get any snowier up there it should be a nice drive. We also "tested" the lines with no lockers and were able to get stuck, but proper line selection would get a relatively stock vehicle through fine.

We were also able to gather a full trash bag full of trash from what looked like a drinking/shooting party. Sad that it was obvious that they had made no attempt to clean up up there.

Yep, that's me. One wheel drive makes for some interesting cruising go up the snowy parts. Although 110 miles on 2 gallons of gas is some cheap fun.

We may be interested - I'll confirm but first, do you all plan on camping up there upon reaching the destination or you just going up and coming back down?

The cookout/camping site is towards the beginning of the trail. You'll have the chance to unload camping items, unhook popups, etc. prior to running the loop further up. But you wouldn't want to run back down to town after the run. There will also be some who choose to not even do the upper loop, and instead just get their camp on early, so by the time the rest of the group returns a lot of stuff will already be set up.

So I guess my burning question is...I'm not prepared to camp, do we just eat, and scoot back down the trail? I would like to do the night run thing, as I've never done a night run, but hate to just get started to end it...

There will be multiple people descending after dinner, in the dark. So don't worry about not making it out of there. You could also explore more in the dark... this run is what you make it really. Not sure if that answered the question though.

Thanks. We don't have a CB, only a two way radio on the truck, so don't want to get too far away from a group...it's the chicken**** coming out in me...:D

Rolling down the window and yelling works pretty well too. Bring warm clothes and a headlamp. The trail is a lollipop shape. In, drop stuff off, drive a loop back to camp. An fj40 will have no problems.(ok, maybe some, but that's part of the fun) Being scared is what this run is all about.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Those mountains are haunted by the spirits of Jeeps that never made it off the trail.

Yeah, when ti comes time to leave there will be a nice stream of slow moving trucks heading down the trail, you'll be fine. :)

That is our plan. :thumb:
