Silver State OHV Trail Interpretation & Monitoring Specialist
BLM, Ely Field Office
Description:

The SST Interpretation & Monitoring Specialist will work with BLM Ely Outdoor Recreation Planners and the Silver State OHV Trail Project Lead to carry out assignments which involve motorized recreation on BLM lands, specifically by fostering proper use of public lands through outdoor education. Specific tasks of the position include:

creating a public education and interpretive plan for proper OHV use in Lincoln County, Nevada, which will include a regional sign plan and actions to minimize motorized recreation in the sensitive Clover Creek drainage;
teach Tread Lightly workshops in the Lincoln County school system; and
work in a team environment with internal and external partners to develop a volunteer based Trail Ranger Project for the Silver State Trail System for public information and long term monitoring of the projects.
Compensation:

Successful applicants will receive the following compensation:

Salary: $35,166 (GS 07 equivalent) annually

o October 2006 – June 2009

o Full time, 40 hours per week

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in recreation planning, environmental studies, restoration ecology, environmental education or outreach, or related field;
minimum of 1 year field experience related to public outreach, recreation planning and/or wilderness interpretation with an interest in motorized recreation specifically.
Knowledge, skills and abilities in the principles of interpretation and public education are required to allow them to assist experienced BLM staff in developing proposed land management actions;
appreciation and understanding of motorized recreation opportunities;
ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public and to write effectively;
understanding of Outdoor Education principles and techniques, experience in teaching or educational programming; and
performing program research and design.
