I needed parts for my 2002 100-series:
  • 87931-60801 - Door Mirror Glass (Right)
  • 87908-60841 - Actuator Assy, Outer Mirror, RH
I performed an exhaustive search to determine where to purchase inexpensive OEM parts with (hopefully) free shipping.

Summary
For the first item, three online dealers had the best prices:

  1. Serra Toyota of Decatur - best price. Free shipping on $75+ orders.
  2. Lewis Toyota of Topeka - nearly identical price (it was $0.06 more than Decatur). Free shipping on $75+ orders.
  3. Ourisman Toyota of Richmond (formerly McGeorge) - Prices similar to the first two dealers, but $13.07 shipping fee eliminated them.
  • This part was not available from Partsouq or eBay.
  • For both Serra and Lewis, I had to add an oil filter (part no. 90915-YZZD3) for $4.52 and an oil drain plug crush washer (part no. 90430-12031) for about $1.40 to get my total over $75 to get free shipping.
  • The oil drain plug crush washer was where Serra beat Lewis. Serra charged $1.37 each. Lewis wanted $1.43. A difference of 6 cents.
For the second item, it was a different story.
  • I purchased the OEM part from eBay from a seller located in Japan. It was nearly $100 less. The part will ship from Japan.
    Cost: Part: $74.00 + Shipping: $12.89 + Tax: $5.87 + Colorado Retail Delivery Fee: $0.31 = Order total : $93.07. Import fees are included.
  • This was much cheaper than any dealership. Lowest cost from a dealer was $168.10 from Ourisman Toyota of Richmond. Serra and Lewis had identical pricing at $176.40.
  • eBay was cheaper than Partsouq as well. Partsouq had 2 choices: $137.54 (dispatch within 24 hours) or $114.62 (2-3 days).
Details
Here are the breakdowns from the 11 dealers for both parts. For some of these, I partially went through the checkout process so I could see shipping fees. These are roughly ordered from cheapest to most expensive.

Serra Toyota of Decatur
87931-60801 - $71.06
87908-60841 - $176.40
Nationwide Free Shipping
Total: $247.46

Lewis Toyota of Topeka
87931-60801 - $71.06
87908-60841 - $176.40
Nationwide Free Shipping
Total: $247.46

Ourisman Toyota of Richmond
87931-60801 - $67.97
87908-60841 - $168.10
Estimated Shipping: $16.94
Estimated Total: $253.01
Winner on cheapest parts but they didn't have free shipping.

OEM Parts Online
87931-60801 - $70.13
87908-60841 - $173.33
Est. shipping: $14.81

This is a Toyota dealership with a cool name for their online part biz. They came in 4th place. I will shop this website again.

Toyota Parts Delivered
87931-60801 - $76.62
87908-60841 - $188.67
Another Toyota dealership with a cool name for their online part biz.

Toyota Parts Overstock
87931-60801 - $73.53
87908-60841 - Part not available

Est. Shipping & Handling: $17.95
Another Toyota dealership with a cool name for their online part biz. It was weird that the second part was unavailable from them.

Toyota Parts Deal
87931-60801 - $72.91
87908-60841 - $177.93
Estimated Shipping & Handling: $12.27

This Toyota dealer is located in Phoenix, AZ.

Toyota of Olathe (Kansas)
87931-60801 - $84.28
87908-60841 - $179.47
Their prices are not even close to Lewis Toyota of Topeka. Both in Kansas.

Stevinson West Toyota
87931-60801 - $78.47
87908-60841 - $194.81
Nationwide Free Shipping
Total: $295.52
Our local fave was one of the priciest options.

Longo Toyota Parts
87931-60801 - $82.18
87908-60841 - $204.01
Longo took the prize for most $$$ parts.

Observations on Toyota Dealers
  • Once you visit a bunch of these website, you notice that there are essentially two online parts platforms.
  • What I consider the "new" platform is used by Serra (Decatur), Lewis (Topeka), Stevinson West, and many others.
  • When you register for the "new" platform, you create an account on Toyota.com, not for the dealer. I am assuming that means I can use this account for any dealer that uses the "new" parts platform.
  • Creating your account and logging in gives you an additional 5% discount. (new platform only)
  • For both Serra and Lewis, I added an oil filter and crush washer to bump my order over $75 to get free shipping. When the 5% discount got applied, this took the order below $75, but thankfully didn't kill the free shipping.
  • The "older" platform is used by Ourisman Toyota of Richmond and many others. I kind of prefer the older platform because it's easier to use and the part names are more descriptive (at least in this comparison).
  • None of the dealers using the "older" platform had the free shipping deal for $75+ orders. But that doesn't mean your order total will always be more $$. Ourisman was only about $5 more expensive than Serra and Lewis because their parts were cheaper.
Observations on other options for OEM parts
  • eBay is worth checking everytime if you have part numbers. I also found a smokin' deal on the 6-piece door belt molding for my 80-series that was $250 cheaper than buying the parts from a dealer. Seriously, check eBay, my friends.
  • It's also worthwhile to enter the part number into Google Search. I found a bunch of other deals for parts using this method, plus additional sellers on eBay.
  • Both eBay and Google show options for non-OEM parts mixed in with OEM, so be aware of what you're buying before you click the buy button.
  • Partsouq didn't win this one, but they often have great deals. Plus their website has great parts diagrams.
Yeah, I spent like 3 hours on this. But I know where I will go the next time I need parts.

I have gone with Serra for items that I don’t mind waiting for.

I recently went with groove for a starter and alternator and another part because I needed them right now. But even with the RS discount there was a significant difference and I wish I could have waited for the parts. Not sure how the core charge works for shipped alternators and starters though.

Here are 2 more dealers that were on my list:

Ed Martin Toyota Parts (Indiana)
"Old" parts platform
87931-60801 - $70.75
87908-60841 - $147.86
Shipping: $18.52
Estimated Total: $264.13
Decent price, puts them in the middle of the group.
This is the dealership where Eric Sarjeant works as General Manager. This is notable for 2 reasons:
  • Eric sells more Land Cruisers than any other dealership in the U.S. He's the guy you call when you want to buy a new Cruiser and you want to make certain you get the vehicle of your dreams.
  • He is the Executive Vice President of TLCA.
Groove Toyota
"New" parts platform
87931-60801 - $102.78
87908-60841 - $255.14
  • This is full retail pricing — it's the only Toyota dealer that shows absolutely no discount at all. You do get the free shipping with $75+ orders. I suspect this is a brand new deal for Groove. When I was looking for parts last year, they didn't have any online store.
  • Many RS members buy parts from Groove, and they provide a RS discount. They are good guys and great to work with. You usually see the RS calendar behind their parts counter. Call them.

This is so awesome @Hulk I do this with almost everything we purchase. One word of caution about ebay, amazon etc. There are a lot of good counterfeit oem Toyota parts out there these days that people are selling on those platforms.

I wouldnt be surprised if the belt molding you found was a counterfeit.

i just did an order last night on toyota parts deal. one most parts, serra was cheaper, but serra can't seem to recognize some of the part numbers that toyota parts deal did even though i "copy/paste" the numbers, so tpd got the entire order. also, tpd will acknowledge and show supercessions. serra didn't recognize old numbers, but when i found the lastest version on tpd, serra recognized that.

i don't think Toyota charges a core as they sell you brand new parts not reman parts like a box store. the box store has a core so they can rebuild and re-sell

Amayama is another option (they also sell through ebay I think). Shipping is kinda slow but things arrive packaged well and it's a decent low price for a lot of things. I just got my stuff to rebuild my steering box from there and it came from Japan packaged really well. you put it all in a cart then they verify/calculate shipping. Usually it goes down since its a bulk order and shipping is assumed per part on the product page. Your examples for comparison:

87931-60801 - $28.88 + $11.27 = $40.15
87908-60841 - $74.64 + $21.04 = $95.68

Total = $135.83

They charge a core. I purchased a starter from Serra 4 years ago. I still have the core in my shed. Idk what the hell to do with it.

they do charge cores. don't know if it's reman or new exchange, but i've had cores on calipers and had to send them back.

I'm with Hans. I'd be very cautious about buying any Toyota parts from eBay or Amazon unless you know the seller. There are many counterfeit parts on those platforms that I don't trust them. You know the old saying if the prices is too good to be true it probably is.

Huh, I hadn't thought about counterfeit parts. It will be interesting to see what I get. I'm more concerned about the 6-piece door belt molding for my 80-series than the mirror assembly shipping from Japan.

Good review Matt. I have had good luck with Sierra during thyeir sales. Recently ordered a part and noticed with their sale discount it took it below $75 so there was a charge of $32 for shipping. I added an air filter for $11 and wala, free shipping :)

I have had good luck on ebay, but always read the reviews and make sure there are lots of them to demonstrate a history. I prefer dealers when I can. I used ebay to buy a replacement dash trim for my 200 from Japan. It was much less than a dealer. Came in a Toyota wrapper with a Toyota sticker and worked perfectly.

Yeah both the alternator for the 2009 Corolla and the starter for the 97 LC were reman from the dealer and they did a core exchange with me. I had an extra core I tried to give them just to make it go away and they didn’t know what to do with it. They would throw it in the dumpster. I don’t understand - if they are shipping back one core anyway why not ship two? Won’t the rebuild place be happy to get an extra free core to rebuild? I want it out of my shed.

You're welcome ;)

Somebody who's on Mud put that website together maybe a year ago. I think there's a paid tier but I'm not sure what that gets you. Pretty neat either way.
