I've been wondering the same thing because I'm paranoid.

luckily it's not my engine. :)

I'm helping a friend fix up a '66 FJ40. When he first got it, the exhaust system was disconnected so I only heard it run with an open exhaust and it was so loud it was hard to listen to the engine and it barely ran. I did some carb and manifold work and reconnected the exhaust and got it running smooth (at idle). However, now that it's running and quited down, I can hear a fairly terrifying noise coming from the lower end (I think). It appears when the engine is revved, but i didn't want to rev it (or run it) much if there is a serious issue.

I listened to some of the videos on You Tube, but this sounds worse than most of those. Time for an engine tear-down??

A guy that I recommended to bustanutley for a front axle had a running 2f in his garage the last time I talked to him. Came from a wrecked '87 fj60. Bought a steering box from him for a reasonable price - maybe the engine could work for your friend.
