Generic smilies are right above the typing text box. Just click on the smilie face and you'll see the generic... I'll look around for some cool ones we can upload ;)

so we've already had 25 people on here at once? I think that broke the last forum's record.. like doubled it.

change is good.

Hey Kipper, nice work.

My old BlueMeanFish avatar pic was 205 x 212 at 25K. Any chance you could open it up to that? Unless you guys all prefer Britney?

Statement from EasyCGI on File Back System Failure

Here's what EasyCGI support had to say after MANY probes as to why there are NO backups.

Hi Kipper,

We recently experienced a hardware failure on our front-end backup system that disabled user file-restores. We are currently in the process of recovering from this failure, and aim to have the user file-restore sty stem operation for your Web server within a week.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. Please note, however, that the file restore utility and the contained backup files cannot be guaranteed for their integrity. We always recommend to all clients to keep local backups of their files as often as possible.

If the integrity of your database is an issue, we would strongly recommend moving your database into another database configuration, such as MySQL.

Best Regards,

I can't really blame them, this was, for the most part, my fault. If you have critical data, you have to keep local backups. As a side note, our new forum IS using MySQL and the new software has a very slick database backup and recovery tool built right in.

Problem with that size avatar is that the header will be huge to fit that icon... I have to think that the old forum resized it automatically. You can see the difference in the 80x vs 100x icon. The 100x icons are much crisper though. Maybe we can move them to the side like on mud because there is alot of wasted header space in the posts so you don't see as many posts on the screen.

Kipper, In the end I'm kinda glad it happened anyway. Live and learn, at least were on more robust software now :D

EasyCGI screwed up

I agree the we should have been making periodic backups ourselves, but they still screwed up. No backups since 2004? That's piss poor. Even if we lost a month's worth of data, that would be acceptable. But they should have had a tape somewhere with a complete server backup that gets rotated out every month. I think these guys were asleep and not doing their job. They cannot be counted upon, and we need to rely on our own backup system for the future.

Again, I will be glad to download whatever needs to be backed up on a regular basis -- and I shouldn't be the only one doing this. EasyCGI is cheap, which is great. We shouldn't expect their systems and service to be state of the art for what we are paying.

They still screwed up. I think we should ask them for a free year of hosting to make amends. We lost over a year's worth of trail reports, technical information, gallery pictures, land use discussions, Cruise Moab archives, meeting minutes, votes on various issues, baby pictures, and the whole Snackster discussion. We had a community library built up, which was helpful for old and new members alike. It was our club history.

Can we ask them to dig deep and see if they have ANY tape or server backups that can be accessed? If we can recover any more of our old forum, it would be really nice.

I do think it's great that we have upgraded to the industry standard -- it wasn't even that expensive. And I'm glad this happened now, instead of 5 years from now. We lost our record of our club history, but only for a year or so.

I just found a backup from April 27th of this year and restored it to the old forum. Thousands more threads are now availible again, but we still lost the whole summer.

I'll see if I can negotiate some kind of deal with the hosting company and try to get someone on the phone that is willing to help out.
