There is national forest camping with trees in the Manti-La Sal National Forest about 25 miles east of Moab. Take sand flats road past fins and things to loop road.

Chicken' Corners is always good for an easy fun run through the sand and some spectacular views.

My favorite dday trip for people who have not been out there and something for everyone is drive out Potash road and hike Corona Arch. Then continue down Potash road to Jug Handle arch and up Long Canyon, nice simple off road and great scenery. Once you get to the highway then off to Gemini Bridges. Then head back to Moab. If you have time head over to Secret Spire and Dellenbaugh Tunnel, easy off road. Lots of fun and alot to see in a day trip. The best maps are the National Geo. Moab South and North.
