Just ordered a new lens: Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR

I've been looking for a new telephoto zoom lens for a few months. Just purchased this lens for $199 + $12 shipping. It comes with a UV filter and a cleaning kit. (It was the same price to order it with or without the UV filter and cleaning kit).

I've been scratching my head over whether to order the 55-200mm VR lens or the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens. I've read several reviews that said the 70-300 wasn't very sharp between 200-300mm, and it's bigger and heavier. Several people have said the 55-200mm is a bargain for the price, so... we'll see.

I guess the good news is that glass holds its value, so if I want to upgrade later, I can get most of my money back.

FYI, I'm shooting with a Nikon D200.

I have the first generation of the 18-200 Nikon VR and can't say I have used a better lens. You will be happy with the quality. The only reason I chose the wider sweep is that carrying one lens was worth the compromise.

That's a great "do everything" lens for sure. I ended up buying the 16-85 Nikon VR for my regular duty lens and it has been great. Now I'm buying a second zoom lens to get more telephoto range. I probably should have simply purchased the 18-200 like you.

I'm already lovin' it. I snapped pictures all day on Christmas sans flash. Natural shading on the face. No washouts. I have the 18-200 which will stay on when there is potential for wildlife but for scenery and morning and evening shots, I am really excited about this one.

fast lenses rule

that 35mm 1.8 is incredible. in my opinion, once you put lens on your camera like that, you're thinking..."yeah! that's why I spent the money on a DSLR"

I love my 35mm...hasn't left my D40x since I got it.
