Is MIP and NPT the same thing?

If I have a 1/2" MIP (male iron pipe) fitting, do I use a 1/2" NPT (National pipe thread) tap? Or is there a IP tap I need to get?

It should be the same. JIS is close but a hair different. BSP is totatally different.
