i had progressive years ago... they dropped me like a bad habit when i mentioned off-roading...
Really, that's where the rubber meets the road ... er, trail.

Has anybody actually filed a claim for damage incurred not-on-the-road, and how did the process go? I understand some trails (looking at you San Juan County) are actually "roads". I'm referring to Forest Services and BLM ""roads" that are wheeling/camping trails.

I have USAA, no real complaints. The land cruiser is like 80 bucks a month, but the century is 260 a month. I've only ever filed one claim and that was 8 years ago with No problems.

I had a buddy flop his FJ Cruiser at an off road park in TX. He had USAA and he didn't lie, and told them be was off roading on private property and they covered everything.

I have Hagerty $35/m for the 85 4R. And Nationwide $343/m full coverage with stated value for the '19 4Runner & plain full coverage on the '09 FJC.
I pay more for carrying stated value on the Big Blue Beast.

My insurance guy is awesome though.
Give him a call.

I use a local All-State office. Their rates were probably 30-40% lower than USAA. I had been with USAA for 16+ years but they raised my home owners by almost $2k in less than two years. Never had to do claims thankfully. I have a $500 deductible on my vehicles due to us commuting and doing road trips. Premium is $685. About to add my oldest kiddo to the plan too…

I know nothing about Hagerty and they want a bunch of personal information to get a quote. So what does $35/month get you for coverages?

I just renewed on the '85 pickup with State Farm. I pay $216/yr (about $18/month) to keep liability on it. It would be about double that to get full coverage (so perhaps comparable to Hagerty?) but until it's actually safe to take on highways I need to keep costs down and opted for the cheapest options. For comparison full coverage (we do $500 deductible, $500K/$250K limits) on the Tacoma is about $560/year (about $47/month).

But neither of these are the car we keep the uninsured driver on so it's not quite a fair comparison. That's a $500/year cost that has to be on at least one of your vehicles in Colorado and we put that on another car. Which doesn't matter, it's a fixed cost regardless on a POS or a Ferrari. As result since we put that on our Forester it costs $1,122/year to cover.

It's a crap shoot honestly, which is why I have a stated value policy now. And some policies mention in fine print & hidden that they do not cover any off-road damage. After my accident, a guy I knew had a roll over off-roading accident, he managed to get it to the trailhead somehow, & his insurance wouldn't even cover the tow from the trailhead because he told them he was off-roading when it happened. I believe that was progressive, but my memory is hella foggy from that timeframe.

I'm sure that's a iffy situation. Are you really off road if you must have a license plate to drive the route? I don't think so. The routes that require OHV stickers, sure, and OHV parks of course. A lot of USFS and BLM routes are also county roads after all.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
We've been on USAA the last few years. It's been much less expensive than Progressive was or before that Country Financial.

I am surprised to hear from people that USAA was more than other companies. This gives me a reason to reach out and see if we can get our rates down.

To everyone who was discussing the refund, we have a lot of coverage at the corresponding cost. Our refund check is usually 1-2% of the total yearly cost of all coverage. It isn't much, but it is something.
