I had to use a 2' section of pipe on an 18" long breaker bar this morning to bust loose the locknut on the FJ40 wheel bearings. The OTC socket survived nicely. I sure like 6-point stuff at a time like this. You gotta wonder what banana last serviced the front end?

Wow, thinking about the tightness you mention reminded me of an issue I encountered with grooves in the claw washer. You'll want to check the claw washer for grooves. I had grooves on both sides and I could not get the pre-load into specification. After getting new claw washers everything worked out smooth. Here is a picture of the grooves I had and yes they were grooved on both sides.

Well on the outer nut I'd probably rather be too tight than too loose, though that does sound awful tight!

And I'm kind of over re-using those star washers, at only $2 each they seem well worth it to toss in with the rest of the parts you're doing, particularly since I've found they tend to skew your outer nut torque no matter how flat you think you pounded them.. so I could see how the last guy chose to give it an extra nudge.

Thanks for the warning! I bought a new washer and a buddy of mine just today warned me of using a badly grooved washer.

Given the neglected most old FJ front ends see, I'm always surprised to see how nice things are in the average 'cruiser front end. I can just imagine a Dana 30 in a neglected old Jeep or Bronco...

Oh, you don't see many of those.

Because they tend to fall off... :lmao:
