placebo gear oil change

So funny, when I got my 60, I opened the fill plugs in the diffs, tranny and t-case and stuck my nitryl gloved finger in each one to (A) verify level (they were all perfect) and (B) wipe the oil onto a piece of paper to observe it. Looks good eh! I have since changed out the rear diff oil when I replaced the axle seals, but it looked just fine.

Well I've got a few miles on it now after all the new fluids... shifts pretty good now. But removing the lock right in the rear diff was the most significant upgrade, can actually turn a corner without the clutch in, and it doesn't slam out of gear like it did during acceleration. So much more better! As long as I take my time between gears I'd say it's working normally.

Adding a lockright was the most significant upgrade I've done to my Land Cruisers, but if you don't shim it properly it will misbehave as described above. When properly shimmed it'll just do a gentle click click click when making a tight turn in a parking lot. My H55F shifts a lot smoother and more easily than either of my H42s, but it probably has less wear on the synchros I bet.

Alright here is what I wound up with... I bought 1 gallon of Sta-Lube Gear Oil as it was the only dedicated GL-4 gear oil they had at NAPA. At $50/gallon, I figure it ought to be pretty good? Then I bought 2 quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh to top it off... so I'll put that gallon in first, then as much Pennzoil as it takes to fill it up.

For the t-case and diffs I bought a bunch of Valvoline. I didn't get the limited slip stuff, but whatever the straight up 80w90 is. And of course a couple gallons of motor oil. Hoping to get a little creeper time in tomorrow...

I ended up at the local NAPA looking for some GL4 - StaLube is now at $70/gallon.

Does anyone run the PennGrade GL4?

It is priced a little better than StaLube.

I use the pen grade, we just started with my new/rebuilt h55f. I only have 500ish miles but for the recommend from mud.

Price is great, so worst case you can swap it after break in.
