Why is discussing Xenfro not an option? Cost? Overhead? Other?

Xenforo is probably our #1 option. We are discussing it -- that's what this thread is all about. :)

Browsing on web browser on phone or tablet is perfectly fine on MUD.

Do you use a browser for MUD or an app? I see there is a XenForo ForumApp on the iPhone app store -- is anyone using it for Mud?

TOTALLY agree. for that alone we should switch to zenforo

Guys, I am really appreciating this discussion. I thought we were going to get a bunch of people saying we should never leave vB 3.8.11. :thumb:

fwiw, my last build thread I actually joined facebook cause of the pita nature of re-sizing pics for RS
Then eventually cross posted to RS cause of the overall pita nature of social media

if RS had the pic sizing flexibility of ih8mud w/o the ad bs of ih8mud I would have never 2nd guessed this forum to begin with as my first choice!!

When I’m on mobile I can do RS on Safari from iPhone 7 (render sucks):

Or Tapatalk where render is good but even to do this I had to log in and there are feed items that get inserted after the first thread in a listing unless I upgrade to VIP which I’m not gonna do:

Vs MUD on Safari (everything is great):

I don’t think the MUD app is active any more.

The concern I have that was mentioned earlier by a couple of people is the version that we are on is not going to be supported for ever. It's already pretty old. I agree with Matt in looking at what we need to do to keep up to date. I was always a fan of windows XP, but when Microsoft stopped supporting it, it was time to move on.

Our current forum renders on my phone just fine...
It's probably just me, it's a pain on an iPhone 5. I don't use tapatalk either and only get the desktop view shoehorned. I guess it renders ok in the sense that the forum resizes to a 4" screen. But it doesn't optimize for a small mobile so images are random sizes and sometimes huge. Composing is impossible.

This is what two examples look like for me. The images were sized 100% (1,136 x 640 pixels at 326 PPI, actual screen dimensions are 3.48 x 1.96 inches). It appears the image uploader resampled them so they may not display 100% still.

Anyway, on the RS the software only offers a desktop view. Things like the little button to the right of a user name that take you to most recent post is a 12 x 12 pixel GIF. That makes them render as a box that's real size is 0.037" x 0.037". The thread titles are 16 pixels (0.05") tall, the new post link header is 19 pixels (0.06") tall. This is fine on a full size screen with a pointer, not when you're trying to hit it with a blunt finger.

Sure, you can zoom in and out. But Xenforo builds a mobile specific version. I assume newer versions of vB can, too. Maybe it's an add-on for this version. Point being since a fair number of visits will be on phones making it pleasant is something to consider.

Then consider the editing window. In a desktop view the box remains 640 pixel wide, which you can of course view at 100% with tiny characters or zoom in to see the text and require scrolling all around the screen.

A mobile-friendly platform resizes the editor window to display text you can see in a box that's the right size for the screen. It relocates the editing tools where you can get them.

Totally understood, and it is great to hear the viewpoint of our webmaster. I still run XP on a couple machines that have software that I use that I love that don't play well with 7/10. I migrated from win 7 to 10 on most (17 or so?) PCs and laptops I run while it was still free, and still like 7 the best (Cortana is still too artificially stupid to be able to tell that she shouldn't tell me to tap and ask a question on a laptop or PC that doesn't have a touchscreen!).

I'll reiterate, I hate Mud (the site) ever since Woody changed up the software. It is slower than dogmeat and I just don't have time for that crap. I can put up with (or block) ads, but the latency is beyond annoying. I don't mind cutting my images down for RS's vB...seriously...if you can't bother to do that then you are just damn lazy.

This is still happening? We may have been hacked again.

I believe this has still been happening to me since its inception. When pulling up the links on google. clicking forum brings you/Me to a page stating it no longer exists..or something to that effect.

Scratch that...I just tried accessing the forum page from google search results and it worked.

Yes Let's please upgrade the forum. I love IH8MUD. I will say I use it the same amount since before and after the change. Also RS is much much smaller than Mud - therefore maybe we would not face the same amount of bugs as woody?

RS needs an upgrade, it feels nothing I want to do is easy and I dont upload pictures as often as I would like because its not simple and they always end up sideways.

I think an upgrade will of course have a small learning curve for the user but will be worth it in the long run. If its easier to post pictures and everything then people will probably be more and more engaged and create more community.

Nah, this is entirely wrong. Resizing images in 2018 is silly when seemingly every website worth its salt can dynamically scale images based on browser size and monitor resolution, even live and on the fly as you resize your browser window.

And how do you know what size you should scale your images manually even if you're the type of person to willingly do excess work when tools exist to do this work for you? My screen at work is a 27" 4k monitor. My laptop at home is not. My phone is not. Many users browse with a full-screen window. Some with a partial window. What's this magic size that you suggest makes all of this work so well?

The death of antiquated web software is by a thousand inconveniences. In a world where things can be changed so rapidly and companies are competing for the best and sleekest UI, sitting still is a sure way to ensure that your web presence becomes obsolete and fades away.

How much of the older site content would be lost by moving to a new system?

We would try to do it so that we'd lose no content. Might hire a xenforo consultant to help us with the transition. There are people who have done this a hundred times who know all the things to do so we don't lose anything.

i was with ya til IFS... :lmao:

I think it's lazy he's not taking an actual picture with film getting, it developed, scanning it, resizing it, mailing it to everyone in a newsletter and then posting it. It's about working smarter not harder. There it no reason to do resize manually when the site can do it for you..

i like slides my self. They provide subtle tones that nothing else does. The projector is alos a pleasure to deal with . Agree about software is meant to be a tool to make our lives easier. If it doesn't do th at, why have it.
