There is a small open stubby tube coming into the engine compartment from the passenger side firewall near where the heater tubes go through that is now discharging coolant when the vehicle is parked for a little while...a pretty steady stream. I can't find any info on this in my FSMs. Does anybody know what this is for and how it is designed to operate? Does this mean there is a blockage in my heater core or some other heater passage?

It may be the drain for your a/c evaporator. Designed to drain the water produced during a/c operation. Your heater core may have failed or just a pin hole in a heater hose filling the box if your coolant is low. We could pressure test the system just let me know if you want me to bring my tester home.

your heater core is leaking and draining coolant out through the a/c evap sweat drain.

Thanks, guys. That makes perfect sense! Although my AC is not functional, I'm sure the heater core leak is the scoundrel. Thanks for the offer, Art, but I's sure a heater core teardown and repair will fix the problem. Now I just have to find time for that! Guess it is the perfect time to fix my radiator pinholes and install my new AC compressor also!
