I need new glass for my 40 and did some searching and was happy to find this thread which states by several people that the windshield is available at Toyota for somwhere in the $100 range. Does anyone have any current info on this topic or background on what would cause those prices to TRIPLE! I called around and both Stevenson East and Burt quoted the same, Burt has one in stock....for $313!!!! Did prices skyrocket? Am I doing something wrong? What happened to the $100 windshields?

I have a 1971 and after checking with Stevinson, Burt on Brodway and with Jerry in Boulder am convinced the windshield for my vehicle is unobtanium from Toyota. I was able to get the windhsield gasket and seal. A couple of months ago, I was getting quotes between 150 and 250 from the glass shops (big and small) here in town.

you can get early models (individual wipers above and vent below) and late models (wipers below), but not mid models (wipers above, no vent below)

I got the windshied for my 74 FJ40 installed at my house last October for $140 by Safelite. That included them supplying a generic gasket. It looks and works fine, no leaks, etc.

I bought a new windshield for my 71 from Stevinson West 2 years ago for around $120. It was the wrong part (too wide by about an inch), and on install day I didn't want to wait another 3 days for them to get the right one in so I took it to a glass shop and they cut it down for around $30. After seeing how it is done, I know I can now cut my own if need be. I installed it myself and it was some work, but it was the first time I had done that job.

In years past I have had windshields cut from flat safety glass and installed for around $200 on my 76.

so it's probably msrp...

Pays to get a club discount.

Sure...what's club discount 15% or something? That's peanuts compared to the 300-ish% increased price from what they apparently sold for very recently. I guess I'll have to check the glass shops.

There's MSRP, then List price, and then Club List prices (TLCA, RS, etc)...Prices can vary greatly between dealers and which "List" price they give you :)

Update: Decided I better check around at the Elites, Safelites, etc. to see what they could do. No aftermarket glass installers can even get that windshield, unless of course they get it from Toyota. It's not even available in the aftermarket anymore. I called Pilkington who is apparently one of the major glass manufacturers (they only sell to installers) and they don't even list a part number or anything.

Good news though, I was advised to call one of the local Safelite shops who can custom cut flat glass. Just talked to the guy and all I need to do is bring in a template and he can cut me a windshield for $100. Score! I'm back in business!

Wes, thanks for the tip on the trademotion website. If I hadn't found the custom option locally, I'd jump on that. $180 I can handle, $313, not so much. What's the story on that site? Are these OEM parts?

I'm sure jerry or joe will match or get close to that. Call them and see. Personally I like the toyota glass better. Tell Jerry I sent you and see what he can do.

I can use a windshield for my 1975 FJ40. There is a chip in my field of view.
