First post..I sure someone has come across this before, so here goes.. I'm looking at buying a sweet fj40 and my wife says no way unless there is some way to put a car seat for a kid in the back. I'm stumped, so maybe someone can help? I will be bummed if I have to settle for a cj over a car seat :(

I have seen lots of people with Car seats. Some in the front Pass seat, some on the rear. You need to get a bench seat because it needs to be facing forward. There was a yellow cruiser at Cruise Moab 2005 that had two car seats in the back and the whole family wheeled together. Couldn't find a picture, but they did Gold Bar Rim

I bought my first 40 in 1982. Both my kids came home from being born in the hospital in it, and it was our only family car for 15 years. Their car seats were strapped to the factory side-facing jump seats in the back until they were old enough to not need car seats any more.

I rolled that cruiser at 45 MPH in 1989, and thank goodness no one was hurt, the car seats and jump seats were fine. The cruiser was fixed and both kids learned to drive on an FJ40.

I know that all the safety gurus say this and that about how to strap in kid carriers, and I even had a forward facing rear seat for a number of years. But there is no denying the physics of how sturdy cruisers are built and how crumply modern sedans are. I'll take my (and my kid's) chances in a cruiser over pretty much anything else.

Obviously not this one, but this family is having a good time!

Does colorado law require a forward facing seat? Also do you guy think a rear bench from a wrangler could be adapted?

Regards,

Not positive on the law but I bet you could find out with minimal research on the web. As for the Dangler seat.....yessir it can. If you're lucky you'll score a fold and tumble seat. They are nice and fit with only minor mods. Big plus is the seat belts are bolted to the seat!

other popular forward facing seats come out of sidekicks, samurais, early chevy blazers and classic broncos.

The one I had came out of a j**p Commando. It had storage underneath, but was a PITA for passengers to access, which is why I went back to jump seats.

My wife refused to let me let the chillun (now almost 5 and 3) in the Cruiser until we had a good seat solution. We could never get the car seats to face forward in the jump seats and be tightened down properly. I bought an old crappy Con-Ferr seat and restored it, which is now bolted down tight in the back of my 40. The car seats work fine now, as long as they have internal straps. Now that my older kid can use the booster seat with a shoulder belt, I'm going to need to do more work to get this up to speed.

You may be able to find a new aftermarket fold and tumble seat, which would be better than a con-ferr seat. The back is too short on the Con-Ferr for comfort.
