All I finally dropped the oil pan… There were metal shavings… The bearing on Rod number six appears to be very loose… Unfortunately the gasket is stuck to the engine… It seems to be attached with gasket sealer all the way around pan.jpg

Crap. Was cheering for something less. But now you know what you’re into.

Shoot! You might as well pull the bearing cap and show us 😳. Have to see how bad the crank scoring is. The gasket is no big deal to scrape off.

should the bearing cap just slide off when I remove the bolts? I'm having problems removing the rod bearing cap (seems stuck) ??? I'm doing this by myself so cant see what is going on when I hand crank it. I removed the plugs and can hand turn the crankshaft. Is there a trick to getting the bearing cap off? Engine is still in the 40...

don't turn it over with the cap bolts removed, take a brass drift and tap the ends of the bolts to break the tension of the oil on the crank.

I dropped the pan and it came off no problem. Then I looked at the rod bearings and replaced them all… Thanks for the advice on the brass drift works like a charm. It was kind of crazy because it was the bearing on the fourth cylinder and that was the last one that I checked. The bearing had spun, and needed to be pried away from the cap. I replaced all of the bearings and the knock has stopped the 40 is back and up and going.

The most difficult part of the job was getting the oil pan back on. I got an OEM oil pan gasket from groove Toyota and fixed it to the pan overnight. Even with the help of a floor jack it was difficult. I definitely suggest that you get for longer bolts (around 2 inches) to center it up and then screw in the the correct bolts. Jeff Z was very helpful in coaching me. I've driven around town a bit… And just did a couple miles on the highway and it seems to be fine. Thanks for your help everyone.

You didn’t need to do anything to the crankshaft?
There were some superficial scratches on the crank wear cylinder for attached and the bearing went bad but I measured it and it appeared to be the right size I also checked it with plastigauge and it was in tolerance. I did hit it with some high grit emery cloth but I don't think that really did anything

In this situation he was able to stop driving in time and prevent further damage. The crank is hardened and is typically the last thing that gets damaged when a rod bearing wears out and spins. Fortunately he also didn't have any issues with the rod or cap either. He should be good to go for a long time.
