Hmmm - no "purple" comments yet?

I think your 40 is easily recognized in that gray color, as no one else really has it. I suppose that could be good or bad. I can see the allure of returning to original paint color, although getting that done inside and out would be quite a bit of effort and cost I would think. Is the engine bay still red? Insides of fenders? Is the entire interior white, or just the instrument panel?

I too like the color Tim used in his first pic. I like the green as well, but green is becoming too commonplace around this club.

Inside of hood/engine bay has black paint that is a little flakey so red is poking through here and there. I have painted the inside of the windshield frame, hard doors, hardtop panels, gas tank cover, seat brackets, fuel filler cover, and dashboard Antique White. The front floor has some kind of bedliner/trunk liner (not very durable, flakes off) and primer. Rear floor is, I don't know, dark colored (like caked-on dirt), as are the (replaced) inner fenders/wheel wells.

I like what Lance at IPOR did with his FZJ40 - he put down some aluminized insulation stuff then covered it with a bedliner material. Would consider doing something similar on the inside when the time comes.

And with this total color makeover I would be talking probably taking the body off the frame and taking it down to bare metal at a body shop...so yeah a LOT of work...

Unless you're trying to do a "back-to-stock" restoration, it doesn't matter what the original color was at this point.

What's your favorite FJ40 color, Matt? Paint it that color and be happy. I've always thought it looked cool in the color you have it now, but it's your Cruiser and it will be for a long time. If you love love love Freeborn Red, go for it. If you prefer a silver metallic, make it so. If you want to paint it a non-Toyota color, do it.

I feel sure that no matter what you choose, it will be super cool. It gets better with each passing year as you modify it to make it stronger, more capable, and more comfortable. The paint color is just another modification/upgrade.

I'm usually one for stock cruiser colors but unless it's fully restored the Brama silver/grey whatever has worn on me. I'd paint it the same as Gary's 45. It's still a cruiser color, just a different year.

I'm kinda partial to freeborn red. My first 40 was that color.

1G3 Magnetic Gray Metallic :D Comes standard on 200 series Land Cruisers :grinpimp:
Or 1E9 Galactic Gray Mica on 100 series Land Cruisers :grinpimp:

What number is the metallic blue that came on 100 series? I saw one the other day that looked great.

That's it. The color chart doesn't do it justice.

Does this mean you're thinking about painting the body again?

Dark Blue, that is it for me. Figured it out the other night, reading the last page of the summer 2010 OJ.

If you see one for sale, le me know.

Is this the royal blue or the nordic or is this even a factory blue for 40?

I'm not sure that's an OEM color - I like Nordic Blue too but it's different. The lines where the color changes on that Pig are not correct...

Here's Nordic Blue:

Yep that was a home paint job on that blue pig.

The Nordic blue is not dark enough for me personally. So I guess maybe the darker blue 40 I saw in the Summer 2010 OJ is not factory.

Matt, that blue on the 40 you posted is my absolute favorite color for a 40. I think it was only offered on the late year models (79-83). The earlier years were more of a sky blue. There is a similar (or the same) color on the 60 series, and it looks great on that as well.

I love the green of my 40, but I'd sell it in a heartbeat to buy a blue one like you posted.

I love that blue as well. My brother used to have an FJ60 that was that color. Wish my 40 was too!

The "Nordic Blue" I guess is actually "Medium Blue" - Code 857 and was a '81-'83 color

The "Smurf Blue" is actually "Sky Blue" - Code 854 and was a '75-'79 color:

There is apparently a "Royal Blue" - Code T452 ('69-'71)/822('72-'74) but I'm not sure what that is...

The 8B2 blue of '86-'88 FJ60/62s is darker than Nordic Blue I think:
