This thread continues to make me happy to live in a rural setting. Nobody is going to make the effort to come see my junk this far from town and would have to trespass to do so.
If only, probably could start a "Cars of Mesa County" thread.

Wow! Colorado doesn't have a "planned nonoperational" vehicle status? Out here in California if you're going to have a vehicle off the road for a year or more, you can put it in non-op status for something like $20. Then when you're ready to get it back on the road, you pay for one full year of registration and do any smog/emissions stuff that's needed.

Otherwise at least in the county I live in, every two years I have to do smog and every year I have to pay registration.
Hey, whatcha know, there's a DMV form DR2303 that appears to be for that sort of thing. Haven't found out much beyond this yet.

This was my thought as well.

City most likely did it.
Lisa called the city about a truck in the street that never moved (made it hard to back out of the driveway)..
Well the city came through and hit everyone in the neighborhood for expired tags, junk on the side of your garage, etc..... Even got me for having my old crawler in the driveway (n).
Ooops 🤭🫣

By this test I'm glad to say Longmont remains rural 😉.
Just gotta watch out for the first lady of RS I guess 😆

I've heard of people with a car/truck/trailer in their name (registration lapsed, fine pending) selling it to their spouse for $1. The spouse then re-registers it without any fines.

I use this form, they used to have a non-op form. Transfer title, give them this form, and no need to register or plate it. It's supposed to be updated with them on an annual basis, but I don't bother.

Hey remember that time you offered to let us all use your address to register our cars? 😁

Not just the emissions testing but the sales tax savings are huge.
just remember to change your voting records...that's where people get busted on that stuff. i was a "resident" and registered voter at a household i've never even been to in clear creek county when i bought the tundra ;)

The registration gig is pretty much nationwide I think, or at least every city I've lived in. In the 5 states I've lived, each city had some sort of rule that if a vehicle was parked forward of the front part of your house, it had to be registered. Oddly enough, the only time I've been cited is in Kingsland, GA, where registering a vehicle pretty much consisted of showing some sort of identification and giving them $20 for a tag fee. ( I think I got away with using a Blockbuster card one time) In the situation I'm referring to, I had an old K20 parked in my driveway for only about a week when I came home to a code enforcement notice/ticket on my front door.

For getting my 80 to the tech inspection, I went to the registration office and was able to get a 10 day tag. It hasn't been registered since 2020 and it was ~$90 to get caught up with not paying fees. I'll see what other fees are going to be associated with getting new stickers once this whole process is finished.

I’ve been affected by this situation several times now. The first was a result of my neighbor doing what ever he could to hassle me. Each city, county or HOAs typically have ordinances on the books concerning unlicensed vehicles. In Jeffco, I wasn’t sited but given 10 days to correct the problem. In my case, I had renewed the registrations on 2 vehicles, but hadn’t placed the new sticker on the plate. So it was an easy fix and was quickly resolved.

When I was titling and registering a vehicle just purchased last summer, I inquired about a vehicle I hadn’t registered since 1998. I was told that the late fees would be capped at $100, but I would need to also pay each past year’s registration in order to get “caught up”. That was estimated at $2,000. So, I put it on the back burner again.

Seeing this thread earlier today, it got me thinking again and I thought I’d check with the CO Dept of Revenue. This is the email response I received;

“Failure to register a vehicle on time results in a $25-per-month late fee after the 90-day period during which initial registration was required, up to $100 total. Vehicle owners must pay the taxes and fees to register the vehicle and pro-rated taxes and fees from the date the vehicle should have been registered to the date the owner registered the car. A supplemental unregistered vehicle fine may be imposed if a person is convicted of misdemeanor, knowingly failing to register a vehicle, within 90 days of becoming a resident of the state.

Exemptions from the late fee include vehicles that are:
  • used for operating a commercial business and were idled for a full registration period;
  • owned by military personnel serving outside Colorado when the grace period for renewal has passed and the vehicle is not operated on a public highway until re‑registration; and
  • stolen, and the registration expired during the time, or duration of, the theft.
The division may establish rules for additional exemptions including:
  • acts of God and weather-related delays;
  • office closures and furloughs;
  • medical hardships; and
  • information technology failures.”

So, the estimate I received from the county appears correct. Somebody wanna steal my 1970 FJ40? I’m sure I’ll be able to recover it someday.

It's when a state-licensed inspector loves your truck's tailpipe very much...

Hope they are up to date on tetanus shots.

While rebuilding the motor on my 40 I had it out front with no motor and got a notice stating that I couldn’t have an unregistered or non-running vehicle. Lucky it was registered back in palisade CO where smog policies do not exist, I’m all for that rigs of Mesa thread. Just had to throw the front plate back on. Then had to rush on the rebuild and got it done and installed before the date. I’m in jeffco right now for school, but I was only give two days, the ten would have been nice. Could have rebuilt on the weekend instead of Tuesday and Wednesday. Not sure what would have happened if I didn’t but definitely was a bit annoying.
