I’ve been affected by this situation several times now. The first was a result of my neighbor doing what ever he could to hassle me. Each city, county or HOAs typically have ordinances on the books concerning unlicensed vehicles. In Jeffco, I wasn’t sited but given 10 days to correct the problem. In my case, I had renewed the registrations on 2 vehicles, but hadn’t placed the new sticker on the plate. So it was an easy fix and was quickly resolved.
When I was titling and registering a vehicle just purchased last summer, I inquired about a vehicle I hadn’t registered since 1998. I was told that the late fees would be capped at $100, but I would need to also pay each past year’s registration in order to get “caught up”. That was estimated at $2,000. So, I put it on the back burner again.
Seeing this thread earlier today, it got me thinking again and I thought I’d check with the CO Dept of Revenue. This is the email response I received;
“Failure to register a vehicle on time results in a $25-per-month late fee after the 90-day period during which initial registration was required, up to $100 total. Vehicle owners must pay the taxes and fees to register the vehicle and pro-rated taxes and fees from the date the vehicle should have been registered to the date the owner registered the car. A supplemental unregistered vehicle fine may be imposed if a person is convicted of misdemeanor, knowingly failing to register a vehicle, within 90 days of becoming a resident of the state.
Exemptions from the late fee include vehicles that are:
- used for operating a commercial business and were idled for a full registration period;
- owned by military personnel serving outside Colorado when the grace period for renewal has passed and the vehicle is not operated on a public highway until re‑registration; and
- stolen, and the registration expired during the time, or duration of, the theft.
The division may establish rules for additional exemptions including:
- acts of God and weather-related delays;
- office closures and furloughs;
- medical hardships; and
- information technology failures.”
So, the estimate I received from the county appears correct. Somebody wanna steal my 1970 FJ40? I’m sure I’ll be able to recover it someday.
