I went in from rainbow falls last year. It seemed like a tame dirt road to me. I suppose there were some slight of camber sections that could be tricky if icy. Let me know how it went Sat. pm please.
The road Mark talks about looks fun.
It's a tame dirt road to us wheelers, but you are right that there are some narrow exposure points if you had a lot of snow that would be iffy to run alone. I've done it with some ice and snow a number of times, but would be hesitant to go in alone with enough snow to consider it snow wheeling vs. driving on a snowy FS road (>12-15").
I point this out purely to be conservative in making recommendations, as it is a fun area with good trees, but
with kids could make it unfun in a hurry if it starts looking risky
I did google the snow amounts in that area and only found reports of about 4-5 inches from last weekend. It appears the heavy totals really were localized on the higher elevations of the Palmer Divide and not in Teller County.
It's supposed to snow a few inches by tomorrow evening up there, maybe 3-4", so on top of last weekend there will definitely be snow, but doesn't sound like you could get into any "drift busting" issues even if you wander as far out as possible.
That new area looks like fun. I'll report back if we end up heading up there on Saturday. Breaking some new ground without getting remote is something
will usually buy into when we go out alone, and we know that if a Sube can get there you simply cannot find a suitable tree
