OK so I really want to do this but don't know if my cruiser is ready for it. My cruiser has those ghetto shackles on the back still to compensate for the sagging springs but sits up pretty well, runs good, drives well, brakes are good, 4wd worked this winter, and has some ok tires that are getting worn down and I don't have a CB. Here are some pics. Should I even try this one?

I have a flux core 110v mig welder. I could grab some 1" square tubing and brace the middle of those shackes with a piece in each until I can afford my proper lift.

I say bring it! It's a reasonably mild trail, especially compared to something like Spring Creek (Father's Day Run).

OK cool. I will mechanically give it a once over this weekend and put in for the 1/2 day off work.

Is there a list of things I should be sure to bring with me?

Whatever you'd normally bring when on an afternoon trip into the mountains. Clothes, food, water, tools. That should cover most of it, anything you lack others will likely have.

Hidden Valley (between Jackson Creek and Dakan) needs 4wd. I got a scary high wheelstand when I was testing my newly installed lockright on the whoops on that section!

Cool I will load up some like I usually do. I have only done a 4x4 trip over Medano pass and up around Gold Camp.

Here's my list of things to bring as well as things to assess your readiness for the trail:

  • Water. Bring more than you need. I usually bring a big jug with some reusable plastic cups. Bottled water works well, too.
  • Sandwiches and/or snacks, in case we get stuck on the trail. Even a bag of pretzels is better than no food at all.
  • Camera.
  • At least one trash bag.
  • Warm jacket, rain gear.
  • Boots or sturdy shoes. I'm always amazed at the number of guys in sandals on 4WD runs. Not me.
  • CB radio. This is always good to have so you can participate in the group chat and hazing.
  • Full tank of gas. You can fill up at the meeting spot -- there is at least one gas station near the King Soopers. We will not stop for gasoline on the way to the trailhead.
  • Basic set of tools.
  • Recovery points, front and rear. Don't worry about buying a snatch strap if you don't have one -- there will be plenty on the trail.
  • Tire pressure gauge.
  • No serious leaks. If you're leaking oil or antifreeze at a significant volume, please fix this before you hit the trail. (If it's a couple of drops every night on your garage floor, this is OK. If you're leaking a quart of oil every week, stay home.)
  • No serious problems. If you're overheating on a frequent basis, the trail is not the place to fix it. Problems always seem to be worse on the trail, so if you're having a problem that you can't figure out, you should EXPECT that it will rear its ugly head again on the trail.
  • No expectations or promises as to what time you will be home. This is an easy trail, but if someone breaks, we could be on the trail later than usual. In other words, if you must be home by 6 p.m., you should hook up with us for a different run on a different day.
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, as you see fit.

Heck yeah I am in except for the CB that just isn't going to happen by then.

Any thoughts on beefing up my shackles?

Weld some 1.5" or 2" square tubing into them and call it good. You said you had a MIG right?

Yeah I will get them braced up some and get the truck ready.

This week worked out a 2-3 pm meeting went until 6pm and I did an extra hour yesterday so I now have 4 hours to take off. You can bet it is Wed and I have canceled my leave request I had submitted.
