I have the big Camp Chef. It works good for what I (we) have used it for. I keep it on the roof rack on the motor home with a 20# propane bottle. I just rope them up or down when needed. It has been used a lot!
Not a propane, but I was given a solo fire pit with the standoff ring. I kind of want to ask the ranger if those would be allowed at DH....assuming you don't overload it and make sure zero ashes fell. They are far more efficient at burning and are fully contained as long as you don't throw cardboard or tumbleweed in it.

We have one like the camp chef, and I've been surprised at how much propane it goes through. Fun to have a fire and would last longer at a lower heat, but that's not as much fun as bigger flames
Here's an action shot at Panorama Point in the Maze. It was cold and the skeptics quickly decided they loved the propane fire pit. View attachment 85056
Tactical Ammo Can Portable Propane Fire Pit: When camping in California parks, because of climate change/drought, you are not allowed to have camp fires anymore. But, your allowed to have portable fire pits. I saw a couple of portable ammo can fire pits on line for quite a bit of $ so I decide…

Do you still have one? I'd love to see how well it works. I was thinking about making one as well but don't want to waste the time/money/energy on one if it doesn't work very well.

this is one of the ones that I made. this was before I fired it up for the first time. The paint on the ammo can does not hold up to heat, so it baked a lot of it off. I plan to sand it down and refinish with high temp paint, since the box is steel and will end up rusting.
I bought this one to the last Rising Sun meeting, and can bring it to the next one. If there is enough interest, I can make some. @MountainGoat has one of the ones that I made, not sure if he has fired his up yet.
