I've got it on the calendar. Saturday run and Sunday Black Bear.

The family is IN !! I got the dates worked out with the FD. We stayed at the 4J last time up. Nice sleeping next to the river. This time maybe the amphitheater campground. We will flat tow the 40 with the 80 so the wife can do some driving!!

I ran it last weekend with mine. I don't think it took more than two backups on any of the switchbacks.
So, instead of Black Bear I might do Poughkeepsie again this year.

I have done em' both...Poughkeepsie is harder IMO. Black Bear is just tight turns, i don't ever lock up cause it just hurts your turn radius. Did Poughkeepsie in a stock 3rd gen a couple years ago and the high dollar jeepers couldn't believe it!
I am a maybe on the Ouray trip, can't beat the area...its awesome to take the family and wife/girlfriend. Is there a deadline or a due date to sign up?

Does Black Bear Pass get its high trail rating due to the pucker factor or are there actual obstacles that are an issue for stock rigs?

Stock vehicles are no problem on anything in the San Juans with the exception of Poughkeepsie. During the FJ Summit I saw a stock FJC, LR3, Grand Cherokee and 4th gen 4runner go down. I had my 100 series down bone stock. It is all about pucker factor and the consequences (which are very real) if you screw something up. I would not feel safe driving my manual 3 speed drum brake CJ5 down it but am perfectly comfortable in a modern or well maintained older vehicle.

We'd still like to get out and camp somewhere out of town on Friday night. Anyone else want to explore and camp?
EDIT: I think we'll just revise our schedule to camp near Taylor Park Res. on Thursday night, near Lake City (or in Ouray) on Friday night, and then meet everyone for the Saturday run.
