Alpine Loop

I started out at the Orient Land Trust to watch their bat colony fly, and fly they did, 250,000 of them. This is in the North East corner of the San Louis Valley and is part of Valley View Hot Springs.

Then onto the Loop with side trips to Corkscrew Pass and Hurricane Peak.

and up into American Basin where I hiked up Handies Peak a little ways.

Then out to Lake City, topped up the tank and headed up the Slumgullion Earth Slide and across La Garitas on Forest Road 7799 from Slumgullion Pass to Hwy 114 SE of Gunnison, which was beautiful. Camped at Arkansa Headwaters and headed home via Mosquito Pass.

I love watching the Valley View bats!! But then I love hot springs too!

I was up there about the same time. The Aspens were peaking and not many people around. I had my first sidewall puncture on that trip.
