Here she is... this is on the Switzerland trail last fall. Yes, it still has the running boards on. I should remove them, but, well, laziness :)

And also attached is one of the 2002. It's a '73 - not a tii, but that would be next on my list!

The Southern Style were building their GX470 live at Overland Expo last year. Nice guys. Talked to them for a while.

There are a lot of aftermarket accessories available from other countries.

Found a great deal on one with a blown transfer case due to actuator seal leak and my brother picked it up a week or so ago. Replacement case showed up yesterday.

We started at about 9pm and a few hours later it was driving perfectly again. They really do drive nice. Was a clean one owner car but when the lady got the estimate from Kuni to do all the work she decided to just dump it instead.

We're in the market for one of these right now as well. Just bought a house near Conifer so the 2011 2WD 4Runner needs to go. Trying to keep our payments down, I'm hoping to find a 2005 with about 100k miles or less.

We're also considering a 2005ish 4Runner V8 as well. But for the prices that I've seen, the Lexus seems like the better choice. Any advice?

This won't be for wheeling because that's what my FJC is for. But, we do have a Toyhauler that we'd be towing. Can anyone shed any light on their towing experience with the GX470? Should I keep the stock air bags or install the ones from my FJ?

Any other insight would be much appreciated!

I looked at a few older runners and they are the same price as the same mileage GX. It really does ride quite well and cruises up 70 with family, dog and ski stuff. Feels very much like the 100 it replaced - honestly, I never really used the 100 for anything other than snow / dirt roads. It is very quiet and the 5 speed is smooth. Heck, I think it even is the 100s front seats.

I still want something a little more "guy camping/ fishing" truck. But for tooling around town and the dirt road passes etc it's pretty legit. Wife is crazy about it. The new runner we had ordered was not nearly as nice. This was half the price.

Ours had a very complete service history and things like plugs and belts done, a CO truck, one owner kept it very clean. 130k for 18.5 has nav and no KDSS. Loved the color (green). Brand new m/s tires. There was a few others one autotrader that looked good but I did not want the color.

Pros- very plush, third row comes out very easy and seat weigh 20 lbs less, nice stock tunes, quiet, smooth shifting. Like the rear door side open - easy for our big dog to get in and out.
Cons- not really sure if I have found any yet. It's a mall cruiser that can get dirty- feels too nice to really mud it at this point.

I test-drove a GX470 and a RX 300 on the same day, one after another. The RX has more passenger legroom (width and length) because it's a unibody, not a body-on-frame. The GX driver seat seemed low (like a 4Runner) and it was tough to get thigh support, which is tough on any 4Runner-class truck. I liked the GX, but wasn't blown out of the water by it. The rear-most (cargo-area) seats have zero foot/legroom - not sure who can ride back there. I would remove the seats and toss them in my garage.

I'm looking to replace our '08 Sienna, because it's such a barge to park, and we don't need the capacity. The replacement vehicle will be a wife-mobile, not a 'wheeler. So, I am looking at Highlander, RX 300/330, etc. as well as the GX.

Agreed that if you want a 'wheeler, it won't be anything based on a Camry (RX, etc.) I really liked the GX's shift lever, low range, diff lock, etc. I think it would be fun for reasonable offroad use.

Great input guys, thanks!

My neighbor just bought a used '08 GX with about 75k on the clock for roughly $25k. It looks absolutely flawless. Just a little drivers seat wear but could pass for a vehicle with 20k miles.

I totally agree with the uselessness of the 3rd row seats. One thing I'd miss vs the 4Runner is the ability to roll down the rear window. My Lab would be pissed.

I went and drove an 05 GX on Friday and was impressed by the throttle response and spunk it had. Also, I thought it handled much more solid than our 4Runner. You can tell it is heavier but much quieter. I think Toyota stripped out all the sound deadening and as much weight as possible to keep mileage down on the 5th Gen 4Runners.

The GX i drove was in pretty rough shape for $16k. It had a bit over 100k miles but seemed to be beat up pretty good. The grill chrome was peeling off and the undercarriage was pretty rusty. The interior smelled and I could see cig burns in the headliner. I wasn't expecting a cream puff at that price range but she was ridden hard and put away wet.

If anyone comes across a good one for $20k and under, please let me know!
Thanks in advance!

Posted my confession in its own thread! Super happy with my purchase at this point.

Clean CA/AZ vehicle that looks like new underneath. 92K miles, Blizzard Pearl w/ Grey leather. Timing belt done at 85K and all maintenance documented and done at either Lexus or Toyota. PO added Volant Cold Air Intake which sounds awesome when accelerating and quiet when cruising. My dash computer says I'm getting 19.7 MPG around town with the intake. The PO also added HID headlight upgrade and I got all receipts in a folder from the small dealer I bought it from.

Only issue I'm worried about is that it got a new windshield recently and I sure hope it was done right!

I'll keep my eye out for the rest of you who wish to confess in the future!!! :)

BTW...the Mark Levinson sound upgrade is INCREDIBLE. Best stock sound system I have ever heard in a vehicle. And the 07 and later models at least have an AUX input.

I'm going to research a bit more what I can do to add more streaming functionality, but I'm very happy with the sound system to this point. The Navigation sucks, but we all know that going into buying an older NAV vehicle. At least the 08 is updated from the earlier models.

We made the switch! Traded in the 2011 2WD 4Runner on a 2006 GX470. Very happy with the Lexus. The ride, build quality, comfort, and power are all superior compared to the 4Runner. 20 MPG with the V8 is better than what we were getting in the 4Runner. That is commuting from Conifer to Lakewood everyday.
The ML stereo is fantastic but they hadn't come out with the aux port yet. I have to get that figured out.
The GX has 114k miles and was a single owner here in Colorado. Soccer mom you can tell. DVD and screens in both headrests. The carfax reported no issues, and every single service was done on time at Kuni Lexus. Timing belt was done last year.
Towing capacity was important since we have a toyhauler that we'd like to fill up and take out. Going from 5k max capacity to 6500 means my wife can take a bunch more crap. :thumb:

Congrats...

There is a way to add an ipod interface to the '06, but it may require removal of your glovebox CD/DVD? I believe it just steals that input. A google search will reveal what I'm talking about :)

Yes, I did that- had to unplug the CD changer to get it to work right, but it has both 3mm and iPhone inputs, works pretty decent. You don't get to manipulate the playlist through the nav or anything, but at least you can stream Pandora, etc.

Also removing half the dash and center console was kind of cool, youtube it and you'll see how it all goes together. I was impressed by how easy it was to get in and out once I saw how it all worked... easier than some others I've been into
