76 FJ40 emissions

I just purchased a 1976 FJ40 with the 2F motor and AFI fuel injection. It has been de-smogged. What am I up against in getting it to pass emissions? What is the best path? I am hesitant to take it get tested at the state station prior to having it sniffed somewhere independently to see how bad it is.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

It's gotta be stock: go back to carb and install all missing smog equipment.

Another option is to have it registered in a Colorado county w/o emissions testing. The fuel injection is probably something you don't want to give up.

or go the Montana route? I've been considering doing that so I can buy a desmoged FJ60 that's been winking at me.

Technically yes on the missing equipment but practically no and there isn't anything that says that if it came with a carb it has to have one to pass. The main practical thing is that the actual emissions are below limits and it appears to have factory equipment, which on a '76 would include a smog pump and EGR, but no cat. They are also big on testing gas caps for whatever reason. The employees at the emissions stations are pretty clueless and as far as even knowing what various components look like. For example, while I was getting my 60 tested, I watched the tech open the hood and look at the passenger side of the engine, then pass the visual for having a smog pump. She was looking at the AC compressor, the smog pump is on the other side of the engine. So few vehicles even have carbs these days I doubt most of the techs even know what one looks like, just like there might be only one that even knows how to operate a clutch and manual transmission (the last several times I got smogged they only had one guy).

I would put a smog pump on it and EGR and just get it tested.

Another way to look at this is to just play dumb and take it to be tested as is. They never open the hood anymore. Not sure if that risks other issues, but it took me 7 tries to get my 60 to pass and never once did they look at anything beyond the gas cap and the exhaust pipe sniffer. Add a little e85 and retard the timing so it barely runs and give it a shot.

@Rzeppa - AFI fuel injection (I have it on my '78 2F) may not be happy with air injected into the engine head. It might still run and pass emissions, but I also think the fuel rail will physically interfere with the AFI components. I had to remove my air rail - no way could I leave it.

If I *had* to run air injection, I would just inject the air into the exhaust down pipe after the O2 sensor. The emission stooges would likely not understand how Toyota intended air injection to work at the factory and let it slide. EGR can be faked (install all the parts, but weld the bung hole shut on the underside of the manifold) and an air system can also be kludged in there enough to look like its working.

If I were the OP, I'd just get it tested and see what they say. My AFI setup runs pretty rich (by design, I think), so it may not pass a CO or HC sniffer, but I have never had it tested.

I agree Steve (and 100% on the emissions stooges LOL), and more what I was thinking is to just install the smog pump but it doesn't have to do anything but spin and look like it's doing something. And I was forgetting that my CA spec 1976 FJ40 has EGR, but federal spec 76s do not, that didn't come to federal spec until 1977. But yeah maybe just take it in and see what happens. The worst that might happen is that it would fail the visual for no smog pump.

When I moved to Califrado in 1980, the legislature had just done away with the safety inspection and initiated emissions inspections. So they don't care if your brakes work or not but perish the thought that you might have a vehicle that's slightly over some arbitrary emissions limit.

My 75 Federal spec does have EGR, or at least it did until last week. It's in a bin now along with the rest of the smog equipment. I think the EGR started on all Federal 40s in 75 not 77.

Federal def had egr, pump and air rail with basic comp in 75. I think there are even late 73 with air rail and smog pump. 55's had earlier emissions equip.

I've pieced together a 75 and 76 emissions. The 77 i bought has high altitude emissions gear which is different than federal and different than cali spec. From 75-79 emissions changed like every 10 months with the 2f. It's become my hobby to understand all the differences lately.

For example the plastic surge tanks vs tuna cans. If anyone needs help with mid 70s emissions i can tell ya what you need. My knowledge ends with the flat top piston 2f in 79 thank god. That is until i buy an 83 fj40 :lmao::guapo:

Nope. Yes on the 73 had smog pumps but EGR wasn't introduced to fed spec until 1977. I learned that many years ago when working on my CA spec 1976.

Well, good news, I passed my emissions. I went to Econo Emissions on Colfax. It is an independent shop that uses the tail pipe sniffer. It actually passed without messing with the timing or de-tuning it. There was not inspection for any of the emissions equipment. I'm off to get tags this week. Thanks for the prior responses.

I would recommend Econo Emissions if you are in need of a test.

That is incorrect Jeff. Not sure where you got that info.

There is plenty of documentation to prove there are federal egr’s in 75. And they were a different style than in 77.

Yup, as I had mentioned before, my 75 had an EGR. And yes, it's relatively well documented that all 75s came with an EGR.
