So my 3rd Gen got hit last night out in front of my house. Guy absolutely totaled his vehicle on my hitch and pushed me into my roommates Subaru and my plate bumper took out his hatch. No damage as far as I can tell to my frame and my stock rear bumper got a little mangled. Trying to decide if I want to pursue anything on this. I would want to get a plate or maybe tube bumper if I do anything to replace it. Guy at least left a note and came over today and gave me his insurance information. Any suggestions? I've never dealt with anything remotely like this before (I've never e
ven made an insurance claim before).

Contact his insurance company and explain what happened and provide all of the guys information. He will likely have already contacted them on his own and know your request is incoming. Then they'll tell you where to go to get an estimate on any damages. Don't claim it on your insurance since the driver is at fault. If the guy is honest and doesn't dispute any of the events it's his insurance that will take care of it. If he's got good insurance you'll basically handle everything with his agent and not him.

When I was hit on Poison Spider the guy had already called his agent to expect my call and everything got paid for with no drama.

Good grief!

First off file a police report if you haven't already. No matter how nice the guy may have been to come back and give you his information he committed a crime and it needs to be reported.

I usually like to contact my own agent and let them know what's happening.

Contact his insurance and see how well they respond. Some insurance companies are easier to deal with then others.

I would file a police report asap. The guy left the scene which is a hit and run, and often when people do that at night it's because they're driving impaired which combined with hit and run is a big deal. Insurance companies will ask for a police report to determine fault, and even though it should be obvious in this case, it's always smart to protect yourself. You can usually file the police report online since there are no injuries, but I may call your local PD and explain the situation first (and make sure you give his license plate info so they can run it). The damage to your vehicles may actually be worse that what you can see right now, so protect yourself and don't take any chances.

That sucks, really feel for ya.

Absolutely contact his insurance and yours. Especially since your truck hit another car, who's responsible can be complicated. And as much as I want not to get anyone in trouble, especially if they're trying to make things right, since it was a hit-and-run due to probably late night shenanigans involved you really need a police report ASAP before vehicles are moved and things changed to make sure your explanation is documented.

Although that's probably more of a problem in moving accidents. I was once pushed into the car in front of me in an accident and was cited. That person's insurance company pursued both of us because depending on circumstances there can be secondary faults such as following too close. You're supposed to anticipate the unknowns and leave enough time and room to maneuver. I went to traffic court over it but since I was fully stopped and had left more space than even normal to account for it being icy the judge decided I had not committed a violation after all and that eliminated the partial fault from me completely. And there's ways to assign you fault. Like if your front wheels weren't turned into the curb like the driver manual tells you, so your truck didn't end up in the yard. Now being close that probably wouldn't change anything but you never know.

Good luck, hopefully nothing is seriously damaged and you end up with a Slee rear bumper at a workin' man's out of pocket price!

It's already too late, I found out right before I was going to go to Easter mass so I really had to go. Took plenty of pictures to try and document things. The guys explanation was that a friend was borrowing his car and he was working a late shift and was on his way back and fell asleep at the wheel. I already had plans for Easter today so I probably won't be able to file a police report till tomorrow.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
Definitely get the police report. When my parked Subaru got hit, everything went fine in the end but... Years later my insurance suddenly had an at fault accident on it. It was from when the Subaru got hit while parked. I had to get the police report and send it to the insurance and to Lexus Nexus to get that fixed. I'm glad I had a police report.
