I'll be replacing my 97 4runner with another 3rd gen soon. I currently have no locker system on my 5 speed and only slightly familiar with the rear e-locker system. As I am looking at 2000 - 2002 I'm seeing some interesting things. First, 5 speeds seem to be pretty rare. Second, I'm seeing the rear diff lock as well as center diff locks which I assume is in the transfer case. What's the deal with the center locks? Does it completely lock it or is it more of a limited slip? I would prefer a truly locked diff. if I end up with a center lock will that cause problems when I decided to spend the money on an air locker? Any input would be appreciated!

The last year for a manual transmission 4Runner was 2000.

The center diff lock makes no difference to the axle diff lockers. The transfer cases with a lock option have a Torsen-type coupling that allows you run 4WD on any surface without binding. This is helpful for snow packed roads as it eliminates the need to constantly shift between 2WD and 4WD as the road surface changes. The lock means it'll work like a regular transfer case, equal torque split front-to-rear. With it unlocked it allows torque to split, sort of like a regular open diff in your axle.

From what I have read it would seem that with the ATRAC system utilizing the abs for limited slip it would not be good to put front and rear lockers on the truck as it would be potentially fighting the abs.

As far as the cdl is concerned, it sounds like your telling me that with it engaged it is just like have the 4wd engaged in my 97 manual?

The last year for the factory E-locker is 2000, although they can be retrofitted into the '01-'02.

Installing a locker in the '01-'02 will just override the active traction control since when engaged the wheels will no longer be spinning at different speeds. Maybe a better way to say it is that it doesn't turn it off, but the computer won't see differentiation between the wheels and therefore won't engage the active traction control.

And yes, when the CDL is engaged it is just like your '97 in 4wd.
