So does anybody have a valve spring compressor that my dad and I could borrow to take out the valves and check them out?

When taking the head to a machine shop, is it cheaper to deliver it with all the valves out or do they prefer to have them in so they keep them matched?

Does the water pump need to come off the engine to get it to seal properly when I put the head back on?

Thanks everybody, now that I'm back from a  spring break I need to get this truck back on the road!

I'd deliver the head to the shop fully assembled - less chance for mixups or fingerpointing should any problems arise. You shouldn't need to move the water pump to install the head.

I have one that is a cheapie and a pita. The ones the pros use takes .02 seconds to use.

You can pull them. If you doing a valve grind they are going to check them and do what is necessary so you don't necessarly need to keep them in order.

How much of a savings?

I just didn't know if it would mean the difference between $200 and $250 or whatever.
